Re: Portrait sketches
EDIT: posting a very quick and very dirty sketch of each colour scheme. I have to admit I'm not fond of the whole coated armour business, so my favorites are still the raw model and possibly the one with the red cape & bronze armour

Yah, the second one looks best. He reminds me of that SotBE guy.

Re: Portrait sketches
Agreed. The second colour concept (bronze armour, red cloak) looks convincing, and I think that it's close enough to the colour of the sprite to make sense. Add in a few dings, some dirt and grittiness, and I think that it will be perfect.Kestenvarn wrote:Yah, the second one looks best. He reminds me of that SotBE guy.
Girgistian draws a mean sketch, and I love the way you've fleshed it out.

Re: Portrait sketches
A painted armor would be very realistic here is a interesting text about the subject http://www.livesteelarmor.com/hm/hf.html .
As for the aesthetic the bronze looks nice but my personal favorite is the green one (plus i think a bronze armor would be bellow the orc's technology level).
I'm sure whatever you and Kitty agrees on will look great though.

Re: Portrait sketches
JAP: enlightening ref indeed and note taken about bronze armour. I might go for brown or black coating in the end.
Also, I like Girgistian's new skeleton and once this orc grunt is finished, I might do something as well with your "flyswatted" model

Re: Portrait sketches
I like the red cape best, but i prefer the rest of the first one, just to be awkward =P
The combination of those two elements would look good IMO.

Re: Portrait sketches
Looking good, personally I'd go with the black or the red one, though I'd probably darken the latter considerably. Team colours are always somewhat difficult with portraits, but I guess we can accept that. The colour tint of the blue one's armour is pretty nice too, but I'm not sure if it would fit with anothe cape.
I'm guessing I'll have to get back to fixing it then.

Re: Portrait sketches
Out of those 4, I prefer the second one. I like the armor of the third one, but not the cape.
Edit: actually, ditto that for the first one too. The cape colors are a bit too bright, methinks. or something.

Re: Portrait sketches
yeah, definitely the second one. the colours work nicely together and it is the one truest to the sprite.
i'm not sure how final your rendering is, but i'd like to note that the leather looks very smooth and new. it will need more smudges/staines, wear&tear...
he's starting to look really good. now i just hope that these guys don't sidetrack you from finishing your loyalists!

Re: Portrait sketches
Just for an instant as I first saw the picture out the corner of my eye, I thought the wolf rider was smoking a pipe. And I thought that was extraordinarily cool.
That's not to say I don't like him anyway, I hasten to add.

Re: Portrait sketches
Wow, I just love that Wolf Rider.
If you're okay with it, I'll paint him once I'm done with the bowmen and the grunt.
