Re: Orc Portrait Series

Woah, it really seems beyond me to visit this place more than once a month, lately. I blame life...
Anyway, I haven't dropped out of orcish business and there has been progress on the archer. Just not much time to show it

I'll take note of the scabbard comment. However, the elbow will most likely remain hidden : 'tis a lot of work for what I consider a minor fix.

And here goes a nearly finished Archer. A few minor light adjustments are still needed, I think.

He looks a ltitle dark to me - the lighting is cool, but it does make it kind of difficult to see the character...

Very cool, but it looks like he's got his back to a fire on a dark night... mainly because the light is so yellow.

i just read "his ass is on fire" alternative to the yellow color you could also mix some red light in that might illuminate his blood-thirsty face. depends on what it looks like.

What I had in mind was more like sunset, actually, but a fire works just as fine...
Remember that orcs are creatures of the night. Hence my trying to portrait them in a light dimmer than the loys'.
In that respect, the contrast between fiery lights/blue-ish darks has become some kind of a trademark features of the orc series. This being mostly because a/ I like it and b/ there has to be some manner of light showing their faces

Anyway, would you consider this further attempt enlightening (haha) ?

Edit : last-minute fix of overall saturation levels that made him stand out a LOT among previous orc portraits.

 Dude, you never disappoint... awesome, as always. I really like the dynamic pose.

The one thing that throws me a bit is that object on his belt. At first I thought it was a piece of armor, but I think it's intended to be a pouch...?

It looks like a breastplate part that's been grafted onto the chainmail - which fits the canon. Orcs don't have good metalworking, and usually don't take good enough care of all the complicated parts, therefore they usually don't have the nice "complete" armor sets like humans do. In fact most of their armor is plundered from fights with humans. This is a salvaged "frankenstein" set of armor - it's mostly chain, but he's got some bits of plate strapped on wherever he can manage, and leather filling any gaps where the chain has been broken.

They're smart enough to use armor, and smart enough to take "okay" care of it, but they're not smart enough to do a good job of making it on their own.

a very plausible explanation. i really like it. what about making the blade slightly broader, since its a strong orc an not a feeble human wielding it?

Well, it can be a salvaged human sword. I doubt human blacksmiths make 'em in XL size "just in case an Orc will take it".
