Beginnings of new faction, testing the water

Well...here's my evidence.I wrote:However I get the impression that the smallest hint of any such concept would be declared 'unWesnothian' and shut down. (Although I don't have any evidence for this...yet)

So you see why I chose to think along lines of new-but-different orcs rather then something as dangerously revolutionary as...*gasp*...a new race. The "I-have-been-involved-in-BfW-for-twenty-years-so-don't-mess-with-me" people would put me out of commission in no time.turin wrote:pigandforks wrote:
so what, you are saying there should never be a new race?
Yes.
However, I also believe that Drakes and Saurians need to be removed, or at least worked over, so most people tend to ignore me when I talk about stuff like this.
But look, I don't wish to get spiteful about the subject. For the above reasons I am not about to propose entire new races. Simple.
Jeez, its 1:30am here in Australia. I'm trying to write this in the middle of exam revision. More tomorrow.
I'm not personally against new races, rather I think that factions based on variations of existing races are more interesting. Rather than get exotic with mutant trolls with 4 arms, having (for example) 3 different types of humans with different cultures, political interests, styles of fighting, historical allegiances with different races, etc. makes for an experience that is just as spicy without the danger of being silly.
Edit: I just want to add that I like the Dark Elves for this reason, but I wish they had some racial diversity. Keeping factions and races as 2 separate concepts was always a strength of the game.

This is something i said when scott expressed his desire for more orcish spins:
You know, just to plunge the orcish movemetn into one thread and to get the ball rolling. You may find the "Frost Elves" in the Dark Elves thread, when Temuchin trampled all over it, hijacked it, and fleshed out a faction in record time.
Complete with typos.Take the Frost Elves idea and make it orcs. I think that riding big Yaks fits them, and they wouldn't mind using wild animals as soldiers. Make the Eskimo a Goblin or a slave of some kind, the Ice Herder would be a nice spin on the Shaman. About the most skilled units, i'm sure something can be fleshed out.
If you want one more idea, i owuld like to propose and entice you with more orcs, they wear armour and use good quality weapons. They are known to be some of the best mercenaries if you can actually get them to fight with you, and their incredible strenght and brutal discipline has given them a reputation as good monster/beast killers. They could be the closest to a elite army as the Drakes are right now (heavy units with uncommon prices for orcs). FYI, i'm thinking of dark amour, big axes and maces, just put up some heavy knight equipment on orcs and give them a good reputation as an army.

Cuyo Quiz: Yeah, I read that post in its original thread. That was what made me start this thread before my brainchild was quite ready. I had been sitting on this idea and then came across that post. It was uncomfortably similar to my own idea.Cuyo Quiz wrote: That big quote from the Dark Elves thread
My reaction was something like, "Holy ****!! Someone may just be brewing a faction idea the same as mine!

Very childish of me I know, but I wanted to be the first to propose a new Orc faction.

Which brings me to my next point...
I had a look through the old threads and found that faction suggestions are extremely common things.
It seems that the general trend is for a newbie (like me!) to get enthusiastic about contributing to BfW, then rush off and come back with a faction idea.
Then a bunch of people (this bit came as a surprise) come along and say something like, "Yes, yes, not bad at all. It could certainly work."
A unit tree is then conjured up and mulled over. After some debate a final version is settled on.
Then comes the big stumper: Art. Jetryl has already mentioned the problems involved so I won't repeat them. But it seems that is the factor keeping many ideas on the drawing board is art.
(By the way, just as a point of interest, it appears the latest 'faction fads' are swarming factions and historically based factions.)
Anyway, I doubt my little idea will get any further then the usual newbie UMFs, but hey, I'll give it a whack anyway.
On that note, I intend to put up the basic background/ideology/setting info about my faction. (It does have simularities to that one Coyo quoted)

Yes! Yes! Go with this idea! It's a good one...(How wierd I am. Posting on this thread AFTER the other one...)
I got started making Eras/Factions of my own the easy way: Taking existing units, and rearanging them into different factions. I made 2 new units, total, for the entire Marsh Era... The Saurian Assassin and the Scorpion.(the Scorpion has since been removed, but it's still in the units folder, along with a whole load of junk I need to clean out)
Wait. Why am I saying this? You made this thread last year...
Edit: Oh yeah, I also made the Spectre Lizard. I had forgotte about that...

It's open source. If you want to make an entirely new race, go for it. The worst they can do is not include it in the official release. (Conversely, it could be the start of a whole new world setting using the Wesnoth engine!)Zhukov wrote:So you see why I chose to think along lines of new-but-different orcs rather then something as dangerously revolutionary as...*gasp*...a new race. Besides, there was a lot of resistance to the Drakes for much the same reasons, and in the end they got in anyway because they were good enough.
