It is funny that with all this discussion, no one asked the question, Mages for Campaigns or for Multiplayer?
In multiplayer, mages can be very risky given their cost and vulnerability.
However, in a campaign, if you can manage to advance them...The Great Mage, Silver Mage and Mage of Light can totally change around scenarios. I don't think anyone who ever played "Return of the Fleet" would say that Silver Mages didn't make a difference there!

Don't go to Glowing Fish for advice, he will say both yes and no.
As I come to think of it, in multiplayer, its very rare i recruit a mage, unless its for some counterstrategy(eg. against undead) and thats actually fine. The access to fire/magic is a good thing to have on the recruit list. Not all units have to equally balanced on an average point of view, this will never be possible anyway as it depends as much on the metagame as anything. The different factions for MP should be strived to be balanced of course.
