Eh, I don't know; I got my first LEGO - not DUPLO - set when I was three. I guess that's a question only Huumy could answer.

Oh, sorry; I should have just given you links to current product. My bad. :?

Happy gift-hunting, and Feliz Navidad. :)

I don't know when I got my first LEGO - it's before I can remember. I know I got a cool LEGO robot about age 7 though.

For what it's worth, I got my first non-Duplo LEGO set when I was five years old. I guess it would depend on the maturity level of the child in question.

Just so everybody knows, the actual Lego boxes themselves say 4+ in a big bold typeface. I think any numbers the Lego Group puts on their main product's box would be accurate for direct danger safety concerns like choking hazards, if not only to reduce their potential legal liability as much as possible.

In fact if you read the warning labels for most toys, it seems that 1-3 is the age where they're really concerned about any sort of possible danger, albeit I must admit there are some toys with a recommended age of 6+. It's rather rare though and I'm not sure if that's for safety concerns or just to give parents a possible idea of what market the product is intended for.

Anyway I'd definitely get Legos if that's what the kid wants. I remember asking for very specific toys when I was young and often getting substitutes. It's a bit of a disappointment and made me wonder why adults don't quite understand. Aside from that, one very nice thing about Legos is that since they're interconnecting building blocks, you can always use more of them: this means if he should get more than one set from more than one person it's not as big of a deal.

As par which Legos, its hard to say without knowing the kid's preferences. I'd be careful about the licensed sets though. You can't really appreciate a Star Wars set quite as much without being a fan or at least knowing that it's cool beforehand and perhaps due to the cost of royalties, you get a whole lot less Legos for your money. It might be worth it nevertheless if he doesn't have a whole lot of cool looking legomen or if the set provides particularly unusual colors like the limited edition Purple that was out a few years back or that sandy Star Wars beige that's meant to emulate the franchise's many infamous deserts though. The official Lego site I linked above looks to be rather well organized though with all sorts of categorization criteria in their shop. You can browse by Age/Theme/Category and it looks like you might even be able to buy individual parts  . It's at the very least good place to start looking at stuff to buy elsewhere if nothing else.

Hopefully this helped.
Htonsew Rof Elttab Eht is just too cool for school. I've got no words to describe it. Have any of you guys tried it? ;-)

This is kinda late but anyway...
I got my sisters son a bionicle lego for christmas I had plans to go shopping but my friend had this perfectly packed and no pieces-missing bionicle laying around his house. He can't play with legos anymore because he's so busy playing WoW so he gave it to me so I can give to my sisters son.

He was really happy for every gift he opened he teared trough every package he was given and clapped his hands in joy when he saw what he got and he told everything about the toys he got to everyone during next two days. :) He couldn't build the legos here but my sister later said he liked the bionicle and actually builded it himself without much help. :)

Kids are sometimes just great, tho I hope to never get any of my own :D

You should go for legos because it gives your sisters son happiness with satisfaction or you could give him another toy of your finding but remember that if it is not liked by him than he just play a while and throw it away.

Direct response to year old post is still necromancy. :P
Reviving this thread for purposes of talking about Christmas gift ideas in this Christmas season would not be, OTOH.
