I wish I could believe in fairies maybe I/my life would be more interesting/happy/funny. (Not saying it's miserable without fairies).
So say hello to the fairies from me when you see them

I'm Polish and in our traditional Slavic culture we believed in ghosts living in trees, springs, rocks etc. There is a very slight difference between ghost of spring and a fairy, at least in our culture.
Oh, I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?

Frankly, I agree with quite a few of the point in your first post MC
And now for my rant:
Why couldn't magic exist? Why do people seem to think that magic has to come in the forms of unicorns and dragons and dragonballZ blasts of energy?
The original myths about magic have been lost underneath a pile of human rubbish. People turning it into fictional books and transforming the whole idea. To name a couple: Deltora quest, Harry Potter.
When I write a book about magic, I'm going to make it much more realistic and believable. And if it catches on, people might just start taking these things seriously.
True, there are a lot of people who don't know intentional normal situations when they see it. Such as taking a picture by a grave, developing it and finding a red smear and going 'OMG ITS A GHOST!'
But, (and this is my big point) just because there is a scientific explanation for something, doesn't mean there's proof of that explanation, and it doesn't mean it's not magic.
I'ts good to see that MC is willing to talk about it, and quite frankly, I find it interesting.
Sorry to say, but I think that's a load of bull. Everyone has the right to believe in what they choose, and therefore everyone should respect each other's beliefs.Qazerowl wrote:I just wanted to point out that I don't think people should have the right to believe in whatever they want. Why couldn`t magic exist?
Interesting question indeed, the problem with it is the concepts of magic and exist. What is magic and what does it means for something to exist?
Magic often seems to mean a wide range of vague explanations of phenomena that may or may not have happened, its not clearly defined at all.
For something to exist in the world there must be an effect we can percieve or measure. In our minds things can exist without a need for a physical phenomena but the activity of the brain.
If one uses magic as an argument, its called magical thinking- a construct that has no percievable effects besides the behaviour of the people that hold these believes. For them it may seems real but for others who are skeptical there is no way to percieve this magic.
The irony here is that i do believe in magic it seems, its just an meta-psychological construct that rejects magical argumentation. Did i just argue that i am a hypocrite?
I believe anyone has the right to believe what they choose, if people act on things they choose to believe- like giving their opinion as i do right now there is no way we should have to respect it. Its all in our rights to argue against it, ridicule or outright reject it. Otherwise it would be like saying you have to respect what i believe and say while i dont allow you to do the same.
What i believe is that we create all sorts of thoughts that are just not valid, for me the thoughts that are valid are based on their ability to stand up to the scrutiny of skeptical and intelligent discourse. Magic just does not.

Not everyone believes in the same thing. Live with it, or don't. (I don't recommend that)Crushmaster wrote:Why?Frogger5 wrote: Sorry to say, but I think that's a load of garbage. I believe that magic is a general term for anything we can't understand or explain.
Or in other words, the real life version of "A Wizard Did It".
I'm not saying strange things don't exist, I'm saying that they're only classed as magic until someone figures out what's actually going on.

Re: Don't say it! (you'll kill one)
Magic is just science that we don't understand yet. There is probably a logical explanation for just about everything: just because we haven't found one yet it doesn't mean that there isn't one.
Using that logic you can easily say that it is possible that fairies exist: After all, there are thousands of species we haven't discovered yet, which could in theory include fairies. We also haven't explored all of earth's landmasses, so there are definitely places fairies could live without us finding them, and I think it's also possible for them to cause hallucinations by emitting some pheromones that induce them.
Personally, I don't believe that fairies do exist because there's no proof, but I do admit that it is theoretically possible for them to.

Fairies? Totally. I once smelled one.

I sincerely hope you're playing devil's advocate here. I mean, if people didn't have the right to believe in anything they wanted, it would mean we'd be in a pretty bad dictatorship situation. Don,t believe in faeries, or you'll be killed? Don't believe/think (and much less say) a bad thing about the president or be deported to siberia? Freedom of thought is a basic human right as per the chart of human rights (I may be mistranslating this).Crushmaster wrote:Why?Frogger5 wrote: Sorry to say, but I think that's a load of garbage. Anyway, Qazerowl's original argument is not even valid. As someone else said, believing whatever you want is alright, but acting on it (depending on the act) s not necessarily. What if you, crushmaster, went to some big city and just shot all muslims you came by, because you believe they are the enemy of God (I hope you don't actually believe this, it's just an example), you'd be arrested pretty quickly, and would have the consequences of your beliefs. Does it mean you don't have the right to be a christian? Of course not, it's absurd. As much as thinking people don,t have the right to be muslims or believe in faeries. Or think the US president is a cactus.

People have the right to believe in anything they want except the idea that they are allowed to impress their own beliefs on others or engage in brash actions driven solely by their own beliefs.
Does that form an acceptable compromise?

To a certain degree, perhaps I am. However, there's also a fine line.Dixie wrote: I sincerely hope you're playing devil's advocate here. My post was pointless, really. That's what happens when you don't think...

Apologies for being foolish.
