Well I can verify that wesnoth-0.4.8 is very easy to compile! Just one change to one file.

Out of curiosity, where could I find the source for wesnoth 0.1? 0.4.8 is way easier to understand than most of 1.8, so I should be in much better shape looking at 0.1. :)

As I side note, I considered replacing all of the 0.4.8 sprites with 1.8 sprites and see how it would look, but then I realized how much work that would be. :)

Due to various issues involving Wesnoth, my personal life and others, I had not been able to visit the second installment of Battle for Wesnoth for all this time — to the point I almost forgot of the existence of the first Wesnoth Evolution article.

Although it might be disappointing to some, to those who haven't seen 0.2 before (or 0.1, or the article on 0.1), it might still be a worthwhile experience to read...
I hope to get to the review of version 0.3 much sooner than in this opportunity.

Thanks for the history - it's really interesting to see how it all started. Just played the 0.1 issue (thanks Penguin), and managed to get through it. All I can say is I am very glad to whoever came up with the next unit key after forgetting half my team for most of the game...
I agree about the archer - he looks like something out of commando.

When I click on the first screenshot:

I get to see this image:

They do not seem to be related (show entirely different gameplay situation), though are both informative.

These archeological expeditions are a lot of fun, shadowmaster. I look forward to the next instalment, whenever you have the time free to do it.

Sooner than I expected, the third installment of this research series is now out, documenting the highlights of the next "major" development version in the 0.x line in six neat pages of text.

What you won’t find here is allies, since Chantal and Galdrad were probably on their honeymoon or something. Those bastards.
If you do play 0.3 you’ll soon start to miss the pointy eared couple that usually helps you around in this scenario.

18:17:23 <Sirp> shadowmaster: IIRC that text later evolved into HTTT
18:20:00 <Sirp> I had originally thought Wesnoth would have a more ancient setting, a Biblical feel to it, and thus polygamy amongst royals would likely be common. Later it seemed to be pushing in the direction of a middle-ages type storyline, and so I removed the polygamy.
Biblical feel... You kinda get that with some of the older add-ons too. A New Order really struck me with it's story telling style. It feels like a campaign set in an ancient past. (even though it's set sometime after the events of Son of the Black Eye.) Whether intentional or not, the parallels between the Akladians and the Israelites are undeniable.

On Topic: I would hate to play thought the first scenario of Heir to the Throne without my elven buddies as back up. Although major kudos for introducing the Princess of Wesnoth in a cliffhanger scenario. Even to this day, The Princess of Wesnoth echoes forth the air of a cliffhanger/turning point... Especially considering how the subsequent scenarios treat most of us...

I definitely look forward to seeing more installments of this history.

Oh, the nostalgia. 0.3 sounds closer to the first version I played than 1.8 is. It's interesting how many of the things Shadowmaster lists that are different that I go "Oh yeah. I remember that" (I think I first played around 0.6)

Great work Shadowmaster. If you go much further with this, I'm gonna have to download and play the older versions. Haven't yet, cause I'm afraid of primitive user interfaces.

In this opportunity, I took a quick look at the prototype version of Wesnoth 0.1's source code hidden in the same archive as the released version.
