Any surviving Undead units from the underworld levels are in your recall list in Showdown at the Northern Swamps. (The story suggests that they have come of their own free will to fight for the living for just this battle, as Delfador explains to Lionel when he objects to Delfador apparently raising undead)

Besides having Shadows with holy claws, I also had quite an arsenal of mages and iron maulers/shock troopers, making that level a breeze. The best part is when the chocobones try to attack an Iron Mauler, and get double damage on the retaliation blow. :lol2:

Necrophage had some kind of drain (gaining HP after kill) - was it removed from Wesnoth or from this description (I'm not undead player).

Necrophage

What you are thinking of is called feeding, and it is still listed under abilities.
Mainline Maintainer: AOI, DM, NR, TB and THoT.
UMC Maintainer: Forward They Cried, A Few Logs, A Few More Logs, Start of the War, and Battle Against Time

Huh, must be the version of DM that was put in the trunk, because I played the old add-on version on 1.6... Stupid Penelopy-thingy-named-ghoul ran away, and the Nameless Shadow from that land of the dead scenario end up getting suicidal-y killed.

Your lucky with all your recalls, by that scenario, all of my veterans were "deleted" inbetween switching from Delfador to Kalenz's viewpoint... But, hey, I could recruit Archmages, who cares! :D.
