Idea: Instead of giving the Swamp elves a Wose, give them Mudglobs instead, which would fit nicely for the swamps.

swamp elves

Post by Githyanki »

I dont think swamp elves are a bad idea if you create them right...of course there are different types of elves..Wesnoth is a big world!
but maybe lets make some of the other races fit what i said.
I'd like to see some new dwarves and humans.maybe wild dwarves would be nice.with some type of mounted cougars to ride.primitive flint axes ,maybe some skilled rangers.yes its true I got the wild dwarf idea from D&D but it is a very unique race. Someone should check out gnomes a bit more too.
If anyone can help explain WML to me..Im an E-mail away.I really would love to learn unit art so i could scan my drawings into units..if possible that is.

Good ideas everyone :)

BTW I made a little campaign with Campgen, its called Orc Attack and it isnt very good yet though.
BTW (again) blueblaze,i was gonna actually give them (trained) saurians, but mudglobs would make a nice lvl 0

I would actually endorse Swamp Elves if they had a more distinct image.

Like for example:

Clothing. They could have reed hats, pouches, belts, use long leather boots, wear some simple animal jewelry.

Armour. Greyed hides, no shoulders and long sleeves, since swamps can get pretty hot. Banners most probably have mementos from different beasts.

Weaponry. Smaller bows, short-ish spears instead of swords.

not true in general
but it requires a very good story and such things
just say "the went to the swamp and so became swamp elves" is not enough
what one need is something like:
in the great war of XYZ the large woods of the east in which some elven tribes lived were burned down by the evil legions. Some of the elves have gone to their brothers in the west but some still considered the burned land theire home. Unfortunatly there was no other way to stop the fire as to summon the creatures of water that changed the wood into a big swamp. Now that the great war is over the leves stilllive there in the hope they can ond day ban all the magic water creatures and change back the land into a nice wood"

... things like taht are what justifies variations of elves. please don't come up with dozens of them just because they are c00l.

I think it's probably because the known races spreading into different terrains strains credibility less than tripping over a new sentient race every time you step out of your house.

I dont think people are intentially trying to get FireMaster down, simply telling him that he has to make the swamp elves a bit more unique and different than just a colour change, for them to interest people.

I like the idea of Swamp Elves, though i think they are too similar to Wood Elves, as i imagine the elves to be living in a swamp in a forest. But yeah I think if you just edit the re-coloured sprites so they look more like they live in the swamp. (basically what Cuyo Quiz said)

Well the ideology of an Elf is simple, they are kick ass where ever they live. So sticking anything you want in front of the word Elf, should most of the time render it a whole new race.

indeed. Which means that the swamp elves should be a different type of elf than the wood elves we have now. They're not. If I colored all the loyalist units gold as opposed to silver, they'd be pretty much the same faction, right? You need new ideas for units. Look at the sidhe elves, the dark elves, the frost elves, and notice all the huge differences they have from default elves. That's how you make stuff interesting, with big changes.

I agree, I am just saying, some people were a bit harsh.

really, fire master, you have great art talent, we could use someone like you in the force. but as of now, focus on creating a unique storyline and comprehensive stats for your units, give the race more details, balance it more:
Swamp Fighter
HP:35 MP:5
Sword (blade) 5-4
Blowpipe (pierce) 4-2 poison

Swamp Archer
HP:30 MP:5
Dagger (blade) 4-2
Bow (pierce) 4-4 poison

Swamp Shaman
HP:28 MP:5
Staff (impact) 2-2
Swamp Blast (impact) 5-3 poison

Swamp Scout
HP:35 MP:8
Sword (blade) 4-3
Blowpipe (pierce) 5-2 poison
should give more variety into the race, creatures that's releated to or at least living in the swamp(don't include saurians, they are already used by drakes), and maybe not giving them all poison attacks, some alternative advancement and special ability for your units would be good. if everything turned out all right, i'd see no harm in this to make it into EE.

Here's a storyline:

When the great disaster that destroyed the forests of Wesnoth happened, some elves went on a great trek to the outer desert.
They found a huge oasis and took refuge there. Soon after that, the Desert Elves found them and called them cowards. The soon-to-be swamp elves viciously killed the desert elves, then using some ancient scrolls, turned the oasis into swamp
