A strange- but simple- solution to the problem of retained gold:

The first player wins the standard "early finish" bonus when he wins the first game - but he can't use it in the second game. It's saved by the server.

The second player winse the standard "early finish" bonus when he wins the second game.

The server then adds the bonus from the first game to the bonus from the second game, and divides that total evenly between the two players for the start of the third game.

That way, doing well in your own fight will net you more gold than you would have had, in the end, but you won't get an undue advantage from it. Only experienced units have a strong chance of helping you in the final battle.

Why the heck would the gold divide evenly? That isnt' intuitive at all, and it seems to punish, rather than reward, the player who does well in the first two games.

If you are going to have a third game, you are going to have had each player win one of the previous two games. Why not just have each player carry over to the third game their gold from the game they won?

No, you're right- a moment of review reveals my suggestion to be profoundly stupid.

The part of it that does make sense, though, is making gold from the first game, like recalled units from the first game, unavailable until the third.
