The dagger...
You should do more details like shading/brightness on metal pieces and textures on his clothes.
Example: the leather can also be brown silk on your portrait. It´s not eaasy to do this improvements, but they make it much better.

I am going to do these finishing touches last, once I have basic shading and shape, then I am going to apply texture, it will take a while, but be worth it. (like you said)toms wrote:You should do more details like shading/brightness on metal pieces and textures on his clothes.

yeah, it does seem a bit short, doesn't it (especially compared to the handle). But that thickness and design on it is staying, I did that on purpose because I like that type (I'm surprised that you've never seen them before)toms wrote:Sorry, a "Ranger M wrote: I like the dagger, whats wrong with it![]()
" explains nothing.
The dagger seems too thick and short to me and too much curved. Just try how it would look if it is longer.
I have seen such a thing before.Ranger M wrote: (I'm surprised that you've never seen them before)
The shape is looking good. But, believe me, if the blade is not at least double as long as the fist´s wideness, then it´s not more useful a piece of metal.
Right, portraits are not weaponphysicalic right, but it should look real(as far as wesnoth can do) and the appearance must be good.

Ok (post will be edited with new dagger soon)toms wrote:I have seen such a thing before.Ranger M wrote: (I'm surprised that you've never seen them before)

EDIT: longer dagger.
EDIT 2: I am going to put this on deviant art (as a semi finished thing), and usually when somebody puts something up there they put a copyright notice on it. But this will be licenced under the GPL licence, how would I put that on there?
It may be me, but the knife looks a bit.. odd. Like blunt-ish and forked in a way. Perhaps what you meant was something like this: http://www.kultofathena.com/images/UC1371_l.jpg, but it doesn't quite look like it.
-edit- The link goes to a picture of Aragorn's dagger in case anyone wants to know.

no, I was aiming for a copleatly different thing.
it's simple (and not quite the same as what is around now days) take normal dagger (with the special kind of end) and then file of the ridge that would be down the middle if it was made with one, giving you a flat edge.
that isn't exactly it, but that is how you would get what I am aiming for from a normal dagger. It is not meant to be exactly like any dagger which I could show you today (not that I have seen) It is similar, but in a definately different style and shape.

Found something that should really help with what you were doing wrong with those sleeves and tops of boots. This is a sample page from Mike Sibley's "Drawing from Line to Life," which I'm going to buy myself. It might be a little a bit advanced, but the material inside is solid, IMO. http://www.sibleyfineart.com/index.htm
Anyways, the section where he says "There is never a sharp join" is key - you were making joins that were too sharp.

Thanks, although I could swear that they were rounded the first time that I drew them because I wanted them to fold (think badly tucked in to the boots, with some loose so that it bulges out a bit), but they got badly edited when I made the legs thinner and the boots smaller. But this is also a mistake I made on a couple of practice drawings that I did and which occurs in that one (after edit).
Also I only just noticed (or forgot about since I saw it) XJaPaN's better shading of the clothes. I recently tried to get the same shading effect (about a week ago) with this (see below) but it took be ages of meticulously choosing the gradient, and still didn't turn out quite right, is there a faster way of doing this? (yes it isn't a particularly good pic, but it was my first try at this kind of thing)
EDIT: and yes, I do realise that he has no eyes, a flat mouth, badly shaded cheeks and a face that is the wrong shape, but please don't comment on that as that is not the reason that I posted it here.
ps Jetryl if the answer to the shading question was in the book that you suggested that I buy earlier, then sorry, but it hasn't arrived yet/my parents haven't told me that it has and i won't know untill I go home for the hols on friday.

no tips at all?Ranger M wrote:Also I only just noticed (or forgot about since I saw it) XJaPaN's better shading of the clothes. Hopefully he'll answer, 'cos only he knows for sure what he did. But to me it looks entirely possible that he 'just' did it using the paintbrush tool and (probably) a graphics tablet.Ranger M wrote:no tips at all?(It doesn't have to be XJaPaN who answers this)

yes, but it is entirely possible that somebody else (eg, jetryl, and I think I saw the same kind of thing in some of leonhard's work) might know a good way of doing this quickly or at least more accurately. and I am using the paintbrush tool, although no graphics tablet.irrevenant wrote:Hopefully he'll answer, 'cos only he knows for sure what he did. thing is that I can make it happen (after a lot of work) but making it look good/right is really hard. Which is another thing that I need tips on (more than the first one).
Then again it probably is in that book, I just wish that the damn thing would arrive.
EDIT: this is now less important, although would still be apprechiated, because I have found a way that works, even if not perfectly.
