LOTR campaign

Post by Durin_the_great »

Hi guys,

I don't doubt that many people have considered and wished for a LOTR campaign. But, mainly because of copyright, most of them just didn't even try. Others found out that the license belongs to Middle-Earth Enterprises, not to Cristopher Tolkien. That's where the rest stopped. One fellow made some MP maps on the topic of middle-earth (I think they stopped working). As far as I know, noone has ever tried to contact Middle-Earth Enterprises even to ask. I wrote them a letter yesterday, and will inform you about the reply. If the reply would be positive (we are allowed to make a campaign), would any of you guys join me creating it (I already sketched a 57 scenario campaign)?

Until the reply and our doom come

Yours

If you get a positive reply from them, then almost every single member of this forum would assist you. We are all Tolkienians here. ;)

Your words are wise, Lord-Knightmare. Nevertheless, I doubt the community would get a free access to a license. May Eru lighten your way!

Hmm, what would Middle-Earth Enterprises have to lose by allowing it? It does not would not affect their current or future profits at all... that's all that copyrights boil down to right?
My god, imagine the factions if this pushed through. Hobbits, Elves, Wild Men, Edain/Dunedain/Numenorian Men, Maiar/Valar, Forces of Evil, Angmar, Haradrim, Easterlings, Dwarves, Eagles
If they are true children of Iluvatar then they should allow it otherwise they serve Morgoth ^_^

They basically *wouldn't* lose anything, but they can think otherwise. Anyway, quite a reasonable and graphically advanced faction of hobbits was already created (someone didn't care about copyrights). It lacks balancing though. I hope they reply me monday afternoon.

May Eru help us

Halfling doesnt necessarily equal Hobbit, if thats what ur talking about. You can find other universes too where exists an race named Halfling.

Sorry dude, but Tolkien was the first one to seperate them as a race. Plus, such units as halfling thane come from Tolkien's works.

May Aulë bless the add-ons you develop

Moreover, the race in era's description is called "halflings (hobbits)".

The reply will hopefully come tomorrow. If we get a positive answer, the works will start. Else, I will consider what conditions and stuff they offer. I will try to reason with them then. Though there is quite a chance they won't even consider the request and just reject it. I think it would be over for now in this case.

Let's hope for the best.

They rejected my request unconditionally. Unfortunately, this is over. At least I tried.

Actually the author of the Silver Age Project made a LOTR campaign ages ago. In is popular enough in the Russian community. It is in English as the main language (with translation to Russian)
The link to download is -

It is working. Some deprecated formats for 1.12. Names are funny. Maps could be more exciting. Story photos might benefit from a filter? Anyway good work. I an glad foreign laws are not enforced in your country.

Oh, and is there a chance to share the rejection letter somehow? Should be good reading unconditionally.

Hi guys.

Since lotr and hobbit didn't go through, anyone knows who/what company owns the licenses for the silmarillion?

Yours

Durin

P.S.
Dear Ernestas,

Just like you, I am both a huge fan of video games and The Lord of the Rings. I’ve had a look at www.wesnoth.org, and I can tell that you and the rest of your team are clearly dedicated to creating an engaging gaming experience.

Unfortunately, the rights you seek are exclusive and held by other licensees at this time. The utilization of characters, names, places and things from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are thus unavailable for use in Battle for Wesnoth.

We trust your game will still be a success without delving into our intellectual property.

Kind regards,

Miles Everstone
