Re: Common Sense Compendium: Now with more General Advice
My tip which seems obvious in retrospect but didn't at the time, is on the harder campaigns you can't be afraid to take casualties (even lots of them) in the early scenarios. The biggest reason I had trouble getting past the first two scenarios of LEGEND OF WESMERE on hard difficulty was that I kept...

Re: Problems with LOW-Hostile Mountains
I posted it a couple of messages back but I'll post it again. If you position Landar so that the orc leader is the only one who can reach him (or ties with another unit as the only ones who can reach him), the orc leader just sits still and the orc units mill aimlessly about the castle, and you can ...

Re: Problems with LOW-Hostile Mountains
Let me get this straight: can you win scenario 1 with just a scout? It should be kalenz reaching the signpost, not anyone else. What tactics you use is up to your creativity No, I can win scenario 1 without hiring anybody, because the orcs just freeze if you position Landar correctly in relation to...

Re: Problems with LOW-Hostile Mountains
The southern orcs seem to just kind of mill aimlessly if you skirt the edge. There seems to be a bit of an AI glitch on this one; the orc leader should always retreat and hire more units, but instead if you position Landar so that the Orc leader can just barely get to him it seems to freeze the orc ...

Re: Problems with LOW-Hostile Mountains
oh yeah, no need to point out that sacrificing the first elvish scout on the second turn of actual fighting was useless and got me absolutely nothing. I thought the second level 3 troll would attack it instead of the archer in the water, but the AI was smarter than I gave it credit for.

Re: Elvish Guide
I'm betting that English isn't his first language so he's probably doing the best he can.
Well, not using "u" instead of "you" and such obviously.

Re: Problems with LOW-Hostile Mountains
Ok I got it. The key for me was what I said a bit earlier: getting veterans in the first scenario was a red herring. I didn't buy any troops at all and just ran my leader to the signpost. I got a teenie bit of XP with a few guys in the upper left city by killing a unit on the turn I won, before movi...

Re: Problems with LOW-Hostile Mountains
Thanks santi! I am banging my head against the wall on this one. My current best strategy is to forget about the first scenario and just rush the leader to the signpost; this lets me start the second scenario with 230+ gold or so. I think if I could get the trolls to engage the dwarves with a couple...

Re: Problems with LOW-Hostile Mountains
I agree with Taemyr: I'm not trying to be a pain but the problem is starting the second scenario with only 100 gold. If you're planning to revert to a 100 gold minimum I hope you'll play it through to make sure it's possible to win at that level. (And share the replay!) I'm fairly sure you would hav...

Re: Problems with LOW-Hostile Mountains
Ahh, newer version. I gotcha. Yeah, if you give me 250 gold for killing that orc instead of 50 I can see a path to victory in Hostile Mountains. So I'll just wait for the new version.

Re: Problems with LOW-Hostile Mountains
Santi: I see the problem. This is an older version of the campaign, yes? You received 250 gold for killing the southern orc leader. In the newer version you only receive 50 gold for killing him on hard difficulty. That's a 200 gold difference which is why you started scenario 2 with so much gold. Th...

Re: Problems with LOW-Hostile Mountains
I agree: How do you start with that much gold AND a bunch of veteran troops on hard difficulty? I can get some veteran troops... and start with 100 gold. Or I can start with 224 gold and no troops with any experience. To start with 220+ gold you have to finish in like 4 turns which doesn't give you ...

Re: Problems with LOW-Hostile Mountains
I'm having trouble moving from normal difficulty to hard on this scenario. I played the first two scenarios on normal and ended up coming out of this one with 521 gold over the minimum, which would obviously make the rest of the campaign really really easy. So I started out on hard and I can't make ...

Re: The Rise of Wesnoth - final scenario
Yeah, my lack of gold was the key. I went back and replayed the scenarios where you get to choose the order (dragon etc) and did them from hardest to easiest this time instead of easiest to hardest. Don't ask me why I decided to do them in exactly the wrong order the first time around. I started the...

Re: The Rise of Wesnoth - final scenario
Besides, of course, what order are you taking the 4 challenges in? There is an order where you can preserve most of your money with them. This was my thought for my best option. I realize this should be a hard scenario, but I don't think it's possible with the force size I can presently bring to be...
