I have another problem - the second objective never really appears. I have killed loads of elves and the objective: Break the Siege is not completed. What is the definition of this objective anyway?

I second that. I like this scenario, because it is more ten killing million of enemy units. It has real variety of strategical challenge and there are some nice ideas like batteling with ghosts only, nice short piece of running to the tree island etc.
