[Problem SOLVED !] Game crashing at building map save/load

Post by Glxblt76 »

Good evening,

Please understand my medium english, I'm french.

I'm coming ask your technical help because my game crashes each time I try to save a map in the map editor.
It's a visual C++ error, so a very general one.

1. Operating system, including its version
Windows XP
2. Version of Wesnoth, including the configured language.
1.10.1
3. A step-by-step walkthrough of how to reproduce the problem. If the problem can’t be reproduced it will severely limit the chance we will able to identify and fix the problem.
1) Open the map editor.
2) Click on "save map" or "save map as" ; or use the keyboard shortcuts : ctrl +c, shift + ctrl + c

4. Please attach a savegame where possible, as this is the easiest way for developers to reproduce errors occurring during gameplay.
Since apart from this issue, the game works well, I don't have any.

5. If you are reporting a crash bug and you are on Linux, Mac OS X and other Unix-like operating system, please try to provide a backtrace of the game executable as described in this thread.
Maybe you call this a "backtrace" :

I think that it's a directory route problem, but I don't see how to solve it.

Thanks in advance for your support.
Regards,
Glx

I'm not very experienced in this sort of thing, but special characters (É) and spaces in filepaths aren't often a good thing.

Can you load add-ons? Because it's probably not a directory problem if you can, as they're stored in (mostly) the same path as maps.

Hi,

Yes, I can install extensions, this problem is my own one.

I precise that I installed the 1.10.1 version in an other computer (windows 7) and then transferred the whole folder in that computer, via an external hard drive.

Could this be the reason ?

Re: game crashing at building map saving

Post by Glxblt76 »

Desperatly, I built this morning a map on my netbook, in which the editor works, and projected to send through my mailbox the map I made on my fix computer, which as more resources.
But I encounter a lot of difficulties to actually find this file on my netbook, and it gave me an idea.

This is how I got rid of that difficulty it and then my idea :
I took me file from Windows 7 and had several difficulties to find it inside the system. In fact, I had to search on google and found a post specifying that the file I was looking for was in Users/Admin/AppData/Local/VirtualStore/Program Files/Battle For Wesnoth 1.10.1.

I actually found it in that weird directory way ... After getting rid of that annoying hidding (Appdata is a hidden folder ...)

But now, I'm on my best computer, a Windows XP one. If the game tries to find this access on XP, it will not (VirtualStore system apparently was implemented on Windows Vista, and let like that on Seven ...). So, Maybe this is the source of the error. Then, how to redirect the way the program takes to save maps ?

Additionnal information :
I had a stderr.txt in the Users/Admin/AppData/Local/VirtualStore/Program Files/Battle For Wesnoth 1.10.1 folder. It was almost the same to the former I shown to you, except this sentence which I can only read on my XP computer :
20120428 19:44:02 error filesystem: Trying to open file with empty name.

You must not have a space in the path: http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=29520

Solution: use another Wesnoth userdata directory when you run the editor. You can achieve it by this command-line parameter: --config-dir . More details here: http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php ... 78#p388078
I work on Conquest Minus • I use DFoolWide, Retro Terrain Package and the add-on 'High Contrast Water'
I moved to Nosebane's corner (Doc Paterson's signature); I am spending my time there, so PM me if I don't answer your post in forums

Hi,

Thanks for your intervention. But ...
I simply don't undestand how to fix this bug even after reading your links.
Indeed, when I'm right-clicking on the name of my game-shortcut, and try to rename it, it refuses special characters like : or /, preventing me from specifying a directory for my userdata.

And I don't have any options avaliable at normal right clicking which let me type commands. I can't open this .exe with Ms Dos Command.

Could you describe me a precise protocol to solve the problem ?

If you right-click on the shortcut then in a textbox "target" you will see something like this:

Code: Select all

"E:\Games\Battle for Wesnoth 1.10.2\wesnoth.exe" --config-dir Wesnoth1.10
side note:
you need to edit it so that it is like this:

Code: Select all

"E:\Games\Battle for Wesnoth 1.10.2\wesnoth.exe" --config-dir "E:/Data/Wesnoth/Wesnoth1.10/"
You can use any path in place of "E:/Data/Wesnoth/Wesnoth1.10/", but it should not contain spaces, national characters ...
Edit: spaces may be allowed (no guarantee)

If I right click, this appears :

Open
Execute as ...
Analyse wesnoth.exe
Add to archive ...
Add to "wesnoth.rar"
Compress and send by e-mail ...
Compress in"wesnoth.rar" and send by e-mail
Add to start menu
_____
Send to ...
_____
Copy
Paste
_____
Create a shortcut
Delete
Rename
______
Properties

This is a translation from french.
Where to click to see what you say ? I don't succeed.
I'm in windows XP.

Click the last item in your list: "Properties".
Then go to 2nd tab, "Shortcut"

Thanks for your help, but I have only those 3 tabs :

General
Compatibility
Summary

None of those 3 tabs contains what you say.

here's an image what this dialog looks like in win7 (including the part you should edit):
http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php ... 30#p449560

according to this page it should like similar in winxp (can't test right now).

here's a wiki page with details about the userdata directory:

Yes, the image Max posted is shown in Win XP too.

The icon you are clicking to is not a shortcut, and therefore 'Shortcut' tab is missing.
You need to find Wesnoth's shortcut, for example it should be in 'Start/All programs'.
(You can also create a shortcut)

Problem solved ! :D

So, to summarize the protocol I used to solve that problem (thanks to the help of all posters on this topic) :

Recipie to solve this problem
- Create a shortcut of wesnoth.exe in the folder where wesnoth.exe is
- Right-Click on that shortcut
- Click on "Properties"
- Click on "shortcut" table
- Add at the end of the field "Target"
--config-dir "C:/programmes/Wesnoth1.10/"
(It's important to let a space at the begin, before "--config-dir")

- Create a folder named "programmes" in C:\directory
- Create a folder named Wesnoth1.10 in the folder "programmes"
TAKE CARE TO DON'T INCLUDE NATIONAL CHARACTERS OR SPACE IN THE NAMES OF THE DIRECTORY PATH : If not, it don't work (I tried ...)

Then I created a new map and saved it, and load it : IT WORKS ! :lol2:

Great thanks for all the helpers !

Did you test spaces but no national characters?

I tested it now and got no problem.
So maybe spaces caused problems only in previous versions of Wesnoth, and Wesnoth 1.10 can use spaces in paths (?)
