Northern Alliance art thread

Post by thespaceinvader »

Art thread for this topic.

Initial concept sprite sketch for the level 0 Landsman. Went with a beard, dark hair which is quite long, and basic trousers/boots with a plaid/kilty type sash across the chest which will develop into a full blown kilt then a belted plaid as the unit advances. The sickle is about as small as it can reasonably be i think. It'll get bigger during the progressions which retain it, and i envision a nice staff-sickle for the 3rd level druid, with attack animations for once using both ends of the weapon =D

If this sort of look is appropriate, i'll go on with shading and detailing, then animation.

Looks rather large. I sense creeping biggerism.

You may be right there. A bit big for a level 0, certainly.

This is supposed to be a level 0?! Then it's way too big.

Mm. I'll work from the peasant base and fiddle the clothing. I think the trouble was working from the height of the spearman as my base, which works for l1, but not l0.

Nobody interested? Aww... =P

Minor update to base frame (making the hair and tunic a bit more defined and highlighted) and melee animation. Frames are in the .zip.

EDIT: minor update to fix an issue with the last couple of frames.

Maybe its just the color that makes me think that.

Mm, the face could maybe stand to be a little more interesting. I considered stealing the eyes from the Ruffian, actually - the current ones are similar to those on the Spearman.

Having given it a try, i find it prefer it the way it is - I've found it quite difficult to make the ruffian-style eyes and the beard not clash horribly. I'll wait and get ESR's opinion.

EDIT: ranged and defence frames, plus all frames and projectile images in a zip.

thespaceinvader, some advice,

1) the main thing, your shading is like gradient. it shouldnt be. use only a few tones of each color, and paintbrush tool should be used _very_ sparingly. do most of the thing with pencil, and maybe a little bit of paintbrush after the basic shading is done. eg see how the ruffian shoes are shaded - those work way better. when doing clothes, use folds - its better than going with just a bright paintbrush line in the middle of the arm, at least.

2)the skin tone is too yellow; ya some older sprites may still use that, but imo the newer sprites, like magi, have much better skin color.

and an example is attached to illustrate what i mean.

the attack animation looks great tho.

I do pretty much everything with pencil, actually (there's a tiny bit of dodge/burn in this, mainly on the hair). However i do tend to end up with gradient shading manually, rather than automatically.

The head of yours certainly looks better. I might just snag it =D I think i prefer my current torso, though. I'll see what ESR thinks. Plus, changing the torso in all the frames is much more work than just copypasting the head...

Meantime, new heads for every frame.

Heh, I thought that team coloured bit was a sword. ;)

EDIT: Reply to below. ...I thought a sash was something else. ;)

Didn't read the first post carefully, didja? =P

In other news... Say he's wearing a skirt, and he'll stick ya. Fighter, level 1. Hopfully avoiding the smooth gradient shading issue SynErr mentioned. Dagger on the belt. Darts stored, as for the previous version, in Hammerspace =D

Any thoughts welcomed.
