Wesnoth on Facebook
I've noticed there are a couple of unofficial Battle for Wesnoth pages on Facebook. All they have is a wiki page insert. No wall posts. I was wondering, is there a reason there isn't an official page? I'm not complaining, I don't really care either way, but I can't get it out of my mind.

I don't see any reason not to have an official page on Facebook. It might be useful for further promoting the game. I can only assume none of the developers feel its worth their time though.

shadowmaster and I were the only ones interested in getting Wesnoth onto social networking and we have similar low opinions of facebook.
I find it ugly, annoying, and ultimately not that useful. Its practices as a business are also incredibly distasteful to me.

Ah, well. I can't say I'm terribly fond of Facebook myself, but it has the advantage of being popular and used by a lot of people.

Well, Google+ looks a lot better, but it is less popular. Any chance of that?

Re: Wesnoth on Facebook
well, this forum pretty much has everything Wesnoth knocked. Someone 'likes' a page, and that's all that happens. When I want news, I don't check a facebook page, I go to the website. Same with Wesnoth, people play game here, discuss stuff in the offtopic, propose ideas, help each other out, chatter, This is pretty much my wesnoth social networking.
Guys I never thought I'd come back to this forum after 8 years this is wild

Diaspora would likely be a better bet coming with the 99% geek population if you really want to do the social networking thing. Popularity for popularities sake is pointless - who cares what anybody else plays? The people you want to promote it to are geeks, and they understand privacy - so they're the most likely group to stay away from Facebook
That said, there's not anything stopping you from creating your own Wesnoth page is there?

Also PMing me about community goings-ons (or tweeting about them @Wesnoth!) that I may have missed is quite helpful. It's honestly hard finding enough things to talk about. For some reason we tend to have a lot going on all at once and then nothing for a while.
Re: Wesnoth on Facebook
Well, @Wesnoth on Twitter is run by a mainline developer/forum admin/lazy bastard and a forum moderator, so we occasionally post about things that no-one else (from the user community) has heard of yet. That’s probably an advantage.averyimaginativename wrote:That said, there's not anything stopping you from creating your own Wesnoth page is there?

Might facebook-twitter integration be useful? I haven't tried it myself, but you'd only have to keep track of the twitter side.

That’s great, but not true. I also thought it would be good to have Wesnoth on Twitter.Gambit wrote:shadowmaster and I were the only ones interested in getting Wesnoth onto social networking
I think having some kind of official-ish presence on Facebook would be a great idea. If shadowmaster and Gambit are opposed to it, maybe other devs/mods/regulars etc. would be willing to manage it, were it given blessing.

Re: Wesnoth on Facebook
I believe Gambit meant it in the sense that we were the only developers/other staff role people interested in that. We even offered other developers to hop in after the account was created and so far absolutely nobody has expressed any interest at all.
@AI: that’s only Twitter → Facebook, unfortunately, which leaves us with the need for a person to watch whatever gets posted in the Facebook page. I’m pretty sure I hate Facebook, and Gambit appears to do as well.
I’d be open to other community members (preferably Forum Regulars or Forum/MP Moderators) helping around but they’d need to coordinate with Gambit and I on IRC.
