Unfortunately I can't help with that problem, but I get it in Multiplayer often.
I get it no matter if I play or just watch.
(I am playing 1.8.1 and using Windows XP with the newest updates.
A lot of data are imported from Wesnoth 1.6.5(1.6.5 is still installed).)

(I am gonna try a new installation later)

Looks like you are not the only one with that problem ;-)

Well, the windows error message doesn't actually say anything, so unless you can provide more information (contents of stderr.txt that mean something or a way to reliably reproduce the bug), we have no clue as to what happened and can't really fix it.

Hello, I got the same run time error, not in multiplayer but on a campaign, Invasion from the Unknown part II by shadowmaster. It comes up on the 'Innuendo' scenario in the dialogue part.

Someone has an an idea to what it can be?

Well boou adviced me to download some sort of dll what tries to prevent runtime error.
He had got the same problem when he downloaded 1.8.0. so i think that this can be fixed like it was fixed....but i don't get this. If i know right this bug was fixed on 1.8.1 but what's the problem? :o

OMG OMG i will make suicide if i can't make this work.

It's a persistent problem for me as well. The key problem is that it appears to be completely random, which makes testing solutions a tediously long process (i.e playing until it crashes).

My first thought was that of a corrupt install. I have 2 other people (needless to say they don't suffer crashes) who share the same internet connection and have used the same .exe to install so I can rule out any internet or download problem. Originally installing Wesnoth in Program Files I decided to move it to My Documents/My Games just in case Wesnoth didn't take too kindly to being put in the previous location - unfortunately this didn't work.

Searching for solutions drew up blanks (the majority recommended installing the latest version of Wesnoth) although there was a recent necro of one of these topics posting a solution here. So after a gruelling search of the internet to find out if the C++ programs are vital/easily replaceable I uninstalled them last night and gave multiplayer another shot. After an hour of playing Sablestone Delta (attached if you want to check it out) the same problem occurred.

Coupled with the fact that both of my brothers have Vista and do not experience this and that many of the reported crashes on this forum are from XP users I'm wondering if there might be an incompatibility in some regard with the XP operating system? :hmm:

As a side note, make sure to quit upon completing a campaign and starting to play multiplayer if you experience these crashes - it may or may not remember your data upon crashing (I had a campaign completion removed through this way) so best play it safe.

Hi guys, also getting 'MS C++ runtime error' randomly.

Currently using Wesnoth 1.8.2 under WinXP(P4 3.0Ghz Prescott - 1GB ram - NVidia 6600GT).

Had same problem with 1.8.1 :-(

Only happens when playing over local network.

2nd PC(P4 2.5Ghz Dual Core - 2GB ram - ATI 3450) has no such problems using same OS!

Laptop(Intel Core Duo 2.2Ghz - 1Gb ram - ATI Mobile) with same OS, also no problems.....

If I remove MS C++, game will NOT start - returns error about missing components :-(

I've got a new laptop and after copying all the software over from my previous computer could try out playing some Wesnoth multiplayer. This was based on the same .exe download and the same connection. After around 5 games I haven't suffered the crash so far.

To conclude, this is not a software error: redownloading/reinstalling the game will solve nothing, neither will removing obscure C++ programs from your PC or playing around with Firewall or ISP. This means it could be a hardware issue or operating system. Next week my old PC will be upgraded to Windows7 from XP so I'll be able to find out if Operating System has an effect on it. Anyway, here are the comparisons of the new/old computer specifications:

Will let you know if the crash occurs on the old after changing operating system...
