New campaign: Mermen's Plight

Post by GregorR »

I finally decided to post this here. I'm on the second scenario of a campaign called Mermen's Plight, in which the humans, having populated out their own land, are invading the lands of other races that they were previously at peace with. You start, and, where possible, play as a merman, one of the last races from which the humans tried to take land (since, well ... why would you take the few little islands from mermen? They don't have much _land_)

The is campaign is available from the campaign server, just use "Get more campaigns..." to download it.

(I'll edit this top post to keep things up to date)

Attached is my scenario list, and here's the map of the world:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a379/ ... en_map.jpg
(Mermen's Plight is not set in Wesnoth's world - I don't want to stomp on any feet. I'm just terrible, aren't I? :) )

SCENARIO LIST:
(All scenario titles, especially stupid ones, may change on a whim)

1) Unprovoked Attack

The humans, in their greed and quest for power, have attacked the
mermen, in hopes of taking their islands (the islands of Arnuhr).

The mermen flee, to enlist the help of the elves.

The human commander in this level is going to be seen again. Presently
he's named Konrad, for entertainment sake.

(Back story: Au'vhal, the Merman leader, is the adopted son of
Vhalenze, an Elvish leader)

2) Elvish Aid

The elves are also under attack, and the mermen help them by defeating
the aquatic troops, which had hoped to cordon off the Elvish peninsula.

The human commander here is Konrad. He flees.

They defeat the attackers, but don't have the power to launch an
assault, and so go to try to enlist the aid of the Dwarves.

3) Friends and Relatives

The islands of Belan, it seems, have already fallen to the humans. The
mermen who were there have been wiped out. The mermen and elves fight
to reclaim the islands.

Konrad is not here.

They defeat the inhabitors, and continue east.

4) In Search of Dwarves

The dwarves are elusive by nature, and the mountains they live in are
virtually impassable, and also inhabited by Orcs. Au'vhal et al try to
find the dwarven caves.

Konrad is not here.

---STORY---

The Dwarves agree to help - the humans have been advancing towards their land
as well, but they never thought that humans would try to inhabit the mountains.

--/STORY---

5) Unexpected Help

Au'vhal et al proceed northwest, in hopes of flanking the humans, and
find that the Orcs are also at war with them. The Orcs pay far more
attention to the humans, and so don't attack Au'vhal et al much. Upon
defeat of the humans inhabiting the Orcish lands, the Orcs learn your
motives and form a reluctant cease-fire (though phrased differently ;) )

The commander here is Konrad (he sure gets around ;) )

The Orcs /do not/ become recruitable.

6) Liberate the Elves

Having come full circle, our heroes attack the strongly entrenched
humans in the elven peninsula. The Orcs are allied with you.

Again, Konrad (you fought him back to here)

7) Finally Home

Sort of a mock scenario, there are hardly any humans still entrenched
on the isles of Arnuhr, but importantly, it's where you get to kill

Konrad.

Perhaps more later, but I think that will work well.
IMPLEMENTED UNITS:
Battleships:
Have 3-10 attack of bowmen onboard. Supposedly people would be attacking the bowmen, not the ship *shrugs*. Several mermen working together can take down a battleship. ... name under construction, battleship implies far more grandiose than I want.

Warships:
Just the next level of battleships. Warships have stronger attack, as the crew have learned how to react to eachother, etc.
IMPLEMENTED TERRAIN:
Docks:
Docks are a sort of castle (in Wesnoth terms) intended for the deep sea. Generally a player with docks (always the AI) would only be able to biuld ships and rudimentary defensive units (otherwise the AI gets confused ;) )
STATUS:
(note: I'm trying to get a bunch of scenarios first, just to make a playable campaign, and so balancing will lag behind basic map design)
  • 1
    • Map: 100%
    • Code: 100%

    • Dialog: 50%

    • Dialog: 0%
  • 6
    • Map: 85%
    • Code: 15%
    • Balancing: 0%
    • Dialog: 0%

WHERE I NEED HELP:
I think the overall campaign dynamic is nice, but:
A) I can't draw. I can't draw at all. Any unit designers would be appreciated.
B) My dialogue sounds like it came from a dime-store novel. If somebody could write good dialogue, that would help.
C) While my maps are usually OK (fine, they're generated and then edited for strategy :P), help is always appreciated.
D) I will be balancing myself, but balancing is not a one-person job.

I'll be doing all the programming myself (well, with help every time I ask a stupid question), including implementation of new units, terrains, et al.

I cheated and used my homebrew map generator for the base map (that is, the world map - every pixel in the world map posted above represents a Wesnoth tile), and modified the maps for strategic or aesthetic purposes. However, there's an issue with my map generator, which is that it generates very dull mountains and such.

If you could help me with the mountainous regions of both the dwarves and the orcs, it would put me twelve steps ahead of where I am. I'm working on level 3 right now (the isles of Belan), but coming up is the dwarven/ish homeland (I can't get used to saying "Dwarvish" and "Elvish"), so assistance on that would be greatly appreciated.

Right now I'm just working on getting the basic layout of the scenarios and some simple events working, I'll work on balancing and making the dialogue not come from a cheesy dime-store novel later :)

I'll post what I have right now when I'm back at my main computer, later tonight. Err ... any suggestions for free web hosting :)

I've a rudimentary web page up, and you can download the current version of the campaign.

BIG FAT WARNING: There are only two levels implemented, and I did very little balancing work. Mind the scale of the new units and terrain and the dialog, they're all under construction.

Do not try to kill the humans in level 1 - oh, and, if you try and succeed, tell me so I can fix that ;) You're supposed to run in level 1.

That's sort of a loaded question ...

Within the construct of the campaign, because they're attacking and pillaging the land of the others.

Within the construct of reality, because people just don't attack humans enough :) I just don't want to imply some silly humans, elves, mermen, dwarves, etc = good and orcs, goblins, nagas, etc = bad, it could be the elves or dwarves or mermen or whatever just as easily, but it's a bit more interesting to pit the presumably human player against his own species.

The objective means that the ONLY way to win is to kill the human leader. Is that really true?

I see the issue - my current download is broken, I have the wrong one marked as the first scenario. Friends and Relatives is under construction. I'm now uploading the proper one, it will be up in a sec and be titled

I haven't added the dialogue yet, but Vhalenze is the person who adopted Au'vhal at birth (hence the name Au'vhal, which is presumed to mean something like Of Vhal(enze)). His name is pronounced Voll-enz. It's just a little back story I threw in to make more of a connection between the seafaring mermen and the (in this story) non-sea-faring elves.

Rename this to Mermens_Plight.pbl. After placing in the user campaigns folder, modify version and description. The go to "get more campaigns" and you'll see an option to publish it.
