Why do I "like" this game so much?
I think this game is bad in many aspects. Matches are very slow. And usually after playing I feel dissatisfied. I spend a few hours playing and nothing too interesting happens.
And yet I still want to play this game again

Yeah the game is bad, it's just addiction.
We only life for the one time to get insane luck.

Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game. This is not going to change. The pace of the game will always be slower than in a RTS.
If the very nature of the game causes you frustration, go play a different game. Seriously, don't waste your time on games that you don't like.
Why don't you try Warzone 2100?

It's not just that it's slower
It's absurdly slow!
But I just told you I crave this game?
And RTS games are often not even strategy games. Most of them involve a lot of micromanaging, combat is not very tactical, and they are like 80% about speed, and 20% about economy.
I am not a big fan of modern/futuristic strategies, and from a quick look at gameplay on YT I am not amazed but maybe I will try it later.

If you don't like micromanagement, try Globulation 2.

Maybe try 0 A.D. then? (It can't be modern if it is 2000 years old)

You can try to enable/disable
If your play style is trial & error, you can play 5 - 10 games (most are retries) in 1 hour instead of 1 game (retry) in 1 hour
You would potentially learn and play quicker due to how fast things get bogged down by animations alone, however it doesn't guarantee you would improve quicker
Though your problem is fog/shroud becomes a walking nightmare when skip A.I. moves is enabled, disable if needed
Multiplayer is quite different, maybe try to join games that doesn't allow you and other participants to think more than 1 minute (less is better)
- Skip A.I. moves
- Show combat (optional)
