Why were the easiest difficulties on some campaigns removed?

Post by iridium137 »

It seems like recently, the easiest difficulties on some campaigns were removed. For example, The Rise of Wesnoth used to have an "easy" difficulty, and Northern Rebirth used to have a "normal" difficulty, and they're gone now. So what happens to the players who want to experience these campaigns, but aren't skilled enough? Are they just out of luck?

The easiest difficulties were not removed, just rebranded. Perception about what is easy and what is not changed and for some campaigns it was considered that their "Easy" difficulties should be branded as "Normal", like in TRoW. Moreover, I would add to that that The Rise of Wesnoth had a balance patch before the difficulties redesignation which actually made it easier. So the current Normal is even easier than the so called "Easy" of the past (at least in most cases). So, this was a renaming not a deletion

I don't think this was the case for Northern Rebirth. For that campaign, there used to be (a long time ago) four difficulty levels, and this was reduced to three. There were a lot of other changes made to the campaign, so it's hard to compare the current (three) difficulty levels to the previous (four) difficulties, but it looks like the intent was to eliminate the easiest difficulty level:

The commit message does not really make it clear what was going on there, but if you look at the actual diff, it appears that the easiest difficulty was simply removed.

It's why I don't waste my time on campaigns. I enjoy a unchallenging relaxing escape while playing and most Wes Camps are pure stress. Screw that.
