[SP Scenario] Nightfall Bastion [Wesnoth 1.17/1.18]

Post by Lord-Knightmare »

Nightfall Bastion

In the age-old Silver Lands of the Great Continent, the eternal Monarchy faces a pivotal moment. The vampire lord of Nightfall Bastion is besieged by crusaders from a human kingdom. This confrontation begs the question: will the vampires' superior strength triumph, or will the crusaders' determination lead them to victory?

Latest bfw from git, with whatever the addon client installed. Normal (easy).

Vampire units were interesting, but with only a single scenario...

Maybe I just got really lucky, but I wouldn't label this as expert. I recruited randomly, gave no consideration to any kind of strategy, time of day, deception, etc. Just a straight up back and forth brawl, where I had a slight advantage on the flanks and could hold the middle easily. I'm sure it helped that I was almost always on the "high ground" (except when I had to trudge through the snow) and the enemy has perfectly happy to fight me from the water/snow. I never felt like there was any question about the outcome, especially once I could get behind the enemy and make extensive use of backstab.
Spoiler:
I never really used my leader. I'm sure his leadership would have been a plus if I had needed it or if I was interested in levelling up some units (didn't need to, and there was no next scenario to make use of them).

Are you saying people are interested in expanding the story into a campaign? I mean I had plans but thought you sorry lot never played my content and would reject (like you all did with NR-rework) so I threw the vampire campaign in the attic. This scenario was meant to be its prelude.

Out of the 14 people who downloaded, I received 2 feedback reports. One is yours saying it's too easy, the other is from a WMG member saying it's unbeatable. Both on the first difficulty. Not sure what to think since one cancels the other out so I cannot detect an overall sentiment for rebalancing it.

Out of curiosity, how many turns did it take you to finish? I finished in turn 40 myself on difficult.

Anyways, updated release v1.0.2

Code: Select all

--> Properly assign difficulty level names
--> adjust gold for first 2 difficulties
--> give player side leader traits: 3 of them
--> replaced HP, +dmg, and MP potions with blood healing potions
--> added more blood healing potion
--> added 3 blitz amulets

I don't care about stories, but I do like building an army of senior units over the course of multiple scenarios. If there were more scenarios, I'd spend more time investigating the units and their advancements. With one scenario, I don't much care about the higher levels, because I'll never get them, so I just recruit whatever looks useful for THIS fight. And I care less about keeping them alive (assuming I have the gold to replace them, which I did).

I don't know of any vampire campaigns, so I'd be sure to try one. Especially if our "hero" started as a freshly turned blood sucker, weak, confused, and alone, who had to discover and develop his powers (such as leadership and "plague", probably nightstalk/conceal, and perhaps even something like petrify/enslave). Probably while being harrassed by werewolves.

I don't think this was too easy, it just wasn't (in this one attempt) what I would call expert level, since I didn't need any sort of tactics. The enemy hits pretty hard, so with a little bad luck and poor use of terrain I can see how they could run right over you but that didn't happen to me.
Spoiler:
I think I finished in about 33 turns.

P.S. An option to disable the noise in the cave (when the lit water is visible?) would be appreciated. It gets pretty annoying after 5, perhaps even 6 seconds.

A LotI person, I see. Maybe World Conquest or the Dragon Saga campaigns are up your alley.

You can give Kromire a go. Not sure if it's still maintained though.

What category would you label this then? Intermediate? Semi-Intermediate?

Hmm, I have to look into that. Maybe doable. FYI, the crackling fire sound is coming from the braziers.

  • What version of Battle for Wesnoth did you play?
1.17
  • What version of War of Legends did you have installed?
The latest
  • What difficulty level did you select to play the scenario? (normal/challenging/nightmare)
I started with a normal difficulty, pretty accurate. I'll test challenging and nightmare at some point perhaps.
  • How difficult did you find the scenario? (Easy/Just Okay/Hard/Tormenting)
With normal difficulty it felt okay, took me 38 turns to defeat the enemies. What made it so time consuming was that the vampires have terrible MP in frozen and the surprise enemies that appeared when you step on enemy leaders keeps.
  • How clear did you find the objectives on the scenario? (1-10)
10, nothing out of ordinary.
  • What would you like to see improved?
It needs a story
  • How much you like the scenario? (1-10)
It's a solid 7 or 8
  • Do you have any additional comments?
Campaign when? It has potential for a campaign imo and the only reason I gave a scenario 7 or 8 is because it lacks a story. Maybe it wasn't your goal to make one but personally I just enjoy story more than the gameplay.

The story is one of the vampire Monarchy's fortresses getting invaded by the Crusaders of Neo-Wesnoth.
I guess the elements are a bit too vague and would have been communicated better if I gave a follow up story.
In any case, this was meant to be a stand alone prequel to something I had planned.

Not sure if or when I would pursue that project. The plot currently looks too generic. Vampire princeling of a vanquished city, escapes, builds up army, conquers weaker vampire nobles and exacts revenge on the Crusaders (which is like Kromire). Open to maybe suggestions to make it better enough to make into a campaign.
