Nor does a Mage of Light riding a Gryphon - they're too heavy ;)

It's more believeable then Gryphon riding Dragon...

Everything is relative, and my idea is relatively more believable than yours

These are some entertaining conversations...

I'd say my favorite magical weapon would be fireball (as in Great Mage) or lightbeam (as in Mage of Light).
For general weapons, I'd like to be an Elvish Archer - some swordplay and some decent ranged attack with a bow in the forest.

I do have a question.

Why exactly would there be reverse marksman? I'm confused.

Imagine riding on a gryphon whilst trying to use a thunderstick.

The wind buffets your arm and pushes you constantly, the gryphon's muscles tense and relax constantly, the beat of it's wings throwing you up and down, shaking your aim, and you move at such speed in the air that you look at small targets who are quickly lost from sight.
Also if you miss you have to try and reload under these conditions, if anything, you would have reverse-precision...

That being said, the chance of focusing on a powerful spell under these effects is also low so I'm kind of attacking myself here.

Ever tried to shoot a pistol or carbine from horseback?

That people throughout history managed to fire bows, crossbows, pistols and carbines from the back of a moving horse at targets either standing still or moving as well. Not only that, but if they were not supposed to hit and get stuck in with some sort of melee weapon, they would charge through the enemy or wheel away to reload and repeat. Shooting a thuderstick is not that conceivably different.

I think shooting from a flying horse would be concievably different.
You have to aim down and your targets would be so much smaller, and you would probably encounter more wind resistence than if you were on the ground.

I have to say mine would be the MoL arcane magic and the mace.

In real life just blast anything away with magic, or if they got near you crush their skulls in.

In wesnoth it's pretty much good agaisnt any undead, drake, or elf that gets in your way. Plus most units don't have that big of resistances to it.

As far as shooting a thunderstick from a gryphon...

Put a scope on it, or maybe grapeshot....or both

If enemy spearmen can get close enough to stab the gryphon then you'd hope it might get close enough for aiming to be less of an issue ;)

That whole burning sword thing always appealed to me. Or a Dragonstaff. And then for a like ranged attack.. Maybe something like the Elvish healer line's slow attack. How does that work, anyway? Throwing branches at something... Or some kind of magic spell anyway. A fireball seems a bit redundant. I've got it! Delfador's lightning thing. Now THAT is cool.

The slow attack says "entangle" which I can only assume, from the picture, means that the shaman (line) conjures up some vines and binds the other unit with them... ties them up. They can't move as much, their attack skill diminishes... but any good warrior will get out of a bondage of vines eventually, hence the fact that slow only lasts one turn.

Turuk wrote:True, but spear and pikes require a great deal of training to be used effectively with others (where their strength comes from), and on it's own a spear or pike in the hands of an unskilled user is probably a liability. More likely to hit someone with a sword. :P
How does the Wesnoth military get so far with just spearmen?

I'm back for now, I might get started on some work again.

Dunno, maybe it also uses Bowman, Heavy Infantry, Fencers, Cavalryman, Horseman, Mages, and Merman. :P

Can't you use acronyms for those? :(
