About the strong trait for mages (or other ranged units).

Strong adds an extra point of damage to melee attacks, but it also adds bonus hit points as well. So the benefit of a strong mage is mostly that they have a few more hitpoints. While the "quick" attribute might seem to be another desirable one for mages, it also gives a hit point penalty as well as increased speed. So a strong/resilient mage will have the most hit points possible for a mage.

The other good trait combinations on mages would be resilient/intelligent, which helps them reach higher levels quickly, but intelligent becomes useless once they reach their maximum level. Quick/resilient is nice because the resilient offsets the hp penalty from quick, but your mage will still be weaker than a strong/resilient one.
