BETTER/MORE ADVANCED TUTORIAL? - Tutorial-style Campaign to teach newish players more advanced gameplay?

Post by Mooburger »

Is there a tutorial-style Campaign to teach newish players more advanced gameplay?

After doing battle training and a 1-2 campaigns, I think this would be useful. Battle Training doesn't go over things like resistance (to weapon types), more advanced abilities (like cure and drain), multiplayer, or more advanced strategy. Also explaining little quirks like healing doesn't stack, poison is cured before it takes effect, etc.
I think this would be useful to me maybe still, but definitely back after I had just finished ToTB and TSG. Even During TSG I had to go on the wiki a lot for various questions, maybe its just me trying to overcomplicate things, but TSG includes all the drain, regenerate, cure, SKELETONS*, presumably as an intro because it is an early campaign.
I think more specifically what I would like is something you can work through, each scenario teaching you a few different things, getting more advanced as you go. There could be some way to skip to any of the lessons/scenarios you want. It would be designed for you to go through a few, then play a campaign or two and come back if you had a question, or not if you didn't want to.

This is an old game, and old games with a lot of data often expect their users to spend time browsing the wiki for answers. But modern gamers just don't expect or want to have to do that...
And this is a strategy heavy game, and frustrating especially with RNG, a cause for many new players leaving; and the current tutorial just doesn't really prepare you for that...

*edit to clarify: I capitalised skeletons because I didn't know about weapon resistance for the first 7 TSG scenarios, just thought I was being unlucky and RNG could effect attack dmg (as in it wasn't just all or nothing). Eventually I looked up why my mage kept beating them in one turn while archers kept getting demolished. In 'Into the depths' the Lvl 3 skeleton (Forgot the name, the melee only one) wiped out half my army single-handed

Please give the development branch (the 1.19.x versions) a go, TSG has been rewritten to be the tutorial and first campaign.

A tutoriial is needed I hope they made one. As some one that has been playing Wesnoth I keep learning every day, and I have been playing for years.

Here is a screenshot from the dev branch. Basically, there are 6 campaigns in a starting sequence for teaching and learning the story. South Guard is the new tutorial. The sequence ends with a reworked Heir to the Throne.
(also the original HttT and Battle Training)

It looks like a good system in my opinion, should help. And they now tell you what the difficulty buttons actually do as well.

If I remember correctly, back when I started to play wesnoth, there was no wiki (yet), but I am not 100% sure. I first played the main campaigns for some time, until I realised which gameplay options may work and which ones don't. For instance, maintaining money/gold income and resource management, took me quite some time to figure out.

At some later point I went to play add-ons, learned quite a bit from that too.

Some scenarios I could not beat; I remember in one cave adventure, one has had to use footpads or so, units with high dodge chance, to "soak" up hits from trolls indirectly. Even with this advice I still did not manage to beat that scenario. I found peace by realising I am not among the top players, so I just enjoy good story content and interesting game mechanics (I kind of transitioned to be more interested in good add-ons, e. g. To Lands Unknown and similar; I feel that these campaigns bring in more novel ideas into wesnoth itself. For new players the default campaigns may be better though). So I am not entirely certain new players really need a wiki or a tutorial as such. What I would do is to make the game itself more "discoverable", e. g. making the documentation in the game more polished and easier to use. Including more hints, perhaps even hints as you play (should be enable/disable basis via preferences though, many old players probably don't want hints anymore).
