Re: Saurian portraits (wip)

Heya, I really liked this image, and was sad to see that it's been two and a half years of no development on it. Now, I can't actually draw, but I have some limited skill at image editing so I thought I'd try my hand at starting an edit, do a little and see if people thought it was worth me continuing. This is in no way finished, but I've put in basic skin and eye colour and done a first pass at paring down the number of fingers (it's clumsy, but I can do a little better if people think it's worth continuing in this vein).

If anyone would like me to I'll continue onwards to colouring the whole thing, doing some basic shading, and maybe even trying to make a no-fish version - I might do so anyway just because I'm in a colouring mood, but I'm easily distracted so having someone actually ask me to do it helps.

EDIT: Have played with it a bit more, added colour to the staff which meant starting on texture, so I also added some texture to the scales.

Probably going to revert the scale texture somewhat, or at least tone it down, because it's not rendering the way I hoped outside of Krita.

Here's a saurian skirmisher portrait by Bielves:

Unfortunately, he's currently unavailable to do more illustrations, but I might eventually commission more portraits if this style is acceptable.

I think its good, but would look better without the outline and a bit darker. No portrait artist here so my edit is a bit dodgy but it illustrates the point.

The general shading style is good, but I agree with DuncanDill that the outline is much too heavy and the colors might be a little too saturated. The bigger issue is that the design seems more comic style than most other semi-recent portraits. The square shoulders is probably the most noticeable aspect, but it's essentially a man with green skin and a lizard head; it doesn't really fit the saurian design as well as the old portraits or the previous WIP portrait in this thread. Another design choice I'd ask to be reconsidered is the clothing/armor - the current version could potentially make sense as Drake-related, but it seems pretty generic fantasy. Something a little more distinct, like the previous WIP portrait or even the current portraits, would be better.

It's a good drawing, but I think it needed more time in the concept/design phase to really fit as a Wesnoth saurian.
