Donation solicitation rather difficult to notice

Post by revolting_peasant »

Let me ask a provocative question: Does the project want donations?

By looking at the website, and the game, it seems the answer is "not really". Why?

* There is no Donate/Support link on the main, top, navbar.
* On the main page of the website, nothing is said about donations unless you scroll all the way down.
* ... and a user has little reason to scroll all the way down, it's the landing page after all, and there's a nav bar, and the trailer, and even some nav buttons within the content frame, none of which mentions donation.
* In the "About" section, donations are not directl solicited, and are mentioned on paragraph 3 as part of the mainline text.
* Within the game itself, "Donate" is the sixth button in a column of buttons under the "Community" dialog tab. It's not invisible, but it doesn't draw focus either; and indicated as a sort of an alternative, or even less-desirable alternative, to chatting and posting messages.

Now, maybe the project is ok with the donation income as it is now. But - even without being very "in your face", it would definitely increase if the possibility of donation were features somewhat more prominently (without being annoying). Just saying.

Well, it is pretty obvious on the first website with a colored button that says donate. Yes at the very bottom and under the point contribute. This isn't a scheme or a fancy commercial product, that cry for donations. Which would seem SUS. If you want to support the project, you will find it. For me this is ok and I finally doing my part and support the project, which took me long enough :hmm:.

If you want to support the project, you will find it.
If you've decide yourself you want to donate, then sure, I guess. But this does not encourage people to donate. And such an encouragement does not "seem sus". Many (most?) FOSS projects solicit donations prominently, and justifiably so. Many do it even in the app itself, which we don't, but we should at least not hide the donation banner IMNSHO.

See also the previous discussion in this topic, especially this post.

I don't have any particularly strong pro or con opinion about the website, but
on my widescreen monitor it seems as if the main design of the homepage caters
more towards small screens. The website has kind of 3x3 parts; left and right
has a ton of empty screen here, and in the middle we have the main content.
This is a bit weird on my desktop system as about 66% is empty here, a bit
below the main navigation top header. For mobile this is probably ok-ish; for
widescreen monitors this seems strange. I tend to zoom in to have things
more easily readable too (old people problem here now).

I guess if the homepage is ever re-designed, one could look at various smaller
parts to improve. Perhaps a donate button could also be added somewhere; if
it is unwanted to have it on the main page then it could be in a subpage or so.
When I click on "about", I get redirected to the wiki, and there it mentions
donate. Perhaps about could be a smaller static text, then a donate button
could be added, as well as the link to the wiki - but I have not thought through
whether this is better or worse than the default, since this would also mean
people would have to click twice. Good design has trade-offs, so I don't know
if such a change would be better or not - but as stated, I have no real preference
either way. (Anyone has historic pages of wesnoth here, the homepage? Would
be interesting to compare it. We have historic screenshots of how wesnoth
looked; might be useful to also store how the homepage looked. I have not
checked way-machine yet whether we could find it. Would be interesting to
look at the time span 2003 to 2010 or so here. But also not hugely important
either...)

There is a donate button on the home page already - it's the yellow button near the bottom of the page.
