Strategic and tactical level maps
Imagine a two-tiered map mechanism: a group of units operates and encounters conflicts on the strategic-level map and enters battles. Each strategic unit represents several units that engage in combat on the tactical-level map.
It seems similar to the mechanism in "Heroes of Might and Magic," but the number of army-level units you can control on the strategic map, each representing a contingent of troops, can be far greater than the heroes roaming the map in "Heroes of Might and Magic." In Wesnoth, the same map interface can be shared, with the only difference being that units appearing on different map levels need to be managed separately.

Re: Strategic and tactical level maps
There are several existing UMC campaigns that basically do that (although they usually use just one "unit" to represent your entire army):
- Bad Moon Rising
- Saving Elensefar
- The Altaz Mariners
- A New Order
- probably others I've forgotten...
Re: Strategic and tactical level maps
As long as I don't have to micromanage like 200 units every turn, Im cool with it. I already forget half my archers behind trees.
