I got interested in this and researched the topic a bit. It seems it's a thing coming from incredibly ancient times. The commit that added Ogre (along with some other familiar units) to the Age of Heroes is this one https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth/comm ... edba06f86c Sep 3, 2004, so it was like 20.5 years ago.

I've tried to search the forums to look for any answer. I didn't find any direct evidence like messages about adding it. Only some proposals and hesitation about ogres being among loyalists. The most probable explanation I can infer is that there are topics about the Eastern Invasion campaign around that time. And EI includes a scenario where Gweddry (so a loyalist force) captures ogres to fight in the royal army. So I guess Ogre was added just for fun to add more units into the AoH era with a justification by EI's scenario with catching ogres.

My initial lookup was wrong, I stopped looking the commit history too early, gnombat gives correct answers below

Well, thx for answer. In my addon called More Unit Forms I added young ogres to recruit list for Northerners, to the Orcs faction. Whats funny ogre can lvlup in to Yeti cause why not. I would like to ask Wesnoth developers to check my addon changes and add it to mainline. For example I dont know why wolves arent created as a one advance line.

That commit did not add the ogre, though - the ogre was already there. The ogre was added over 4 months before that, on April 15, 2004, in commit 1c6cb6adbe31e4de2233da640497bcdb05640461, which added the Age of Heroes.

Note that Eastern Invasion was not added to mainline until June 11, 2004, in commit 5c8dad13936eb62a508b213f5a181b1fee1bfcdf - almost 2 months after ogres were added to loyalists in Age of Heroes.

I think the reason that ogres were added to the loyalist faction is simply that in Heir to the Throne ogres are found in Wesnoth's army. This seems to be alluded to in Eastern Invasion where it is said that ogres have been on the side of "the Crown in the past."

Damn, good catch, I noticed Ogre highlighted in green and rushed to search the forums but Ogre was just moved inside the recruit list string (so, deleted and re-added in another place)

That's even more amazing, not just Ogre was added so long ago, it was added into the Age of Heroes together with the Age of Heroes itself and even together with multiple eras functionality!

The reason of why Ogres are in the Loyalist faction is stated in the description of the Young Ogre.
Here it's an excerpt.

"When still young, Ogres are sometimes captured and taken into armies to be trained."

There is a default map where you can use some units like the Young Ogre if you chose the Loyalists.

Hornshark Island. Played that map with addon eras until I noticed in the code that default era has a hidden prize with it.
