Northern Rebirth undocumented alternate campaign

In Battle for Wesnoth 1.8.3, Northern Rebirth had three difficulties, I think the name was: Easy, Challenging, Hard.

Actually back then there were four difficulties.

At scenario 4, Clearing the Mines (the scenario for this thread), a scripted event happened: an enemy came close to Tallin, then I was given a strange chance:
-Cautious (Stay away).
-Brave (Inspire troops by killing abomination).

It sounds like you were playing the add-on campaign Northern Rebirth Remake rather than the mainline campaign?

Now, this situation must have happened not only in the version of Battle for Wesnoth current for 2020, but also in the previous years too. Was it there in 2011 and 2012, when I played the Northern Rebirth campaign in the Easy and Challenging difficulty? Possibly so - the development thread I found talking about it was from 2010. Was it there already, and did I not notice?

Not really - the WML code for the alternate branch was at one time included in the mainline campaign, but it was disabled and/or commented-out so there was no way to actually play it in the game. I believe it was playable only in the Northern Rebirth Remake add-on and possibly in very old versions of Northern Rebirth when it was itself an add-on (before it became a mainline campaign).

It sounds like you were playing the add-on campaign Northern Rebirth Remake rather than the mainline campaign?

That would surprise me. I have not yet taken an interest on campaigns other than the Mainline - my intent is to finish the mainline campaigns in all available difficulties, only later would I search for new campaigns.

Still, I cannot rule it out - I have been playing Battle for Wesnoth using computers with the GNU/Linux distribution Trisquel, which is an Ubuntu derivative. And something odd has been happening for some years - installing the game (as usual, from the system Add/Eliminate Aplications menu) gets the game installed with no campaigns. Using the Add-ons menu inside the game does certainly offer a lot of campaigns for downloading and playing - except the mainline ones! It took me a while to realize that in order to get the mainline campaigns I needed to use the system tool name Synaptic Package Manager, install the metapackage named wesnoth, and that would install all the packages for all of the mainline campaigns. Tricky. I cannot rule out the possibility that four years ago I was trying to play Northern Rebirth, noticed the absence of mainline campaigns, sought for it in Add-Ons instead, and got the remake instead.

Indeed, it is a known issue that Ubuntu installs Wesnoth without campaigns.
