Very disappointed

Post by Azradun »

Being a long time player (I played this game at least as far as 2008 and before), I recommended this to a friend I know for a couple of years. I am on PC, she is currently on Mac. So I gave her the download link for us to play online. As I have a dynamic IP, and there are firewall and routing issues, I didn't make a local server but created an online accoint and asked her to do the same.

So, long story short, she told me that her security code never arrived, and apparently the game is region locked? She's in Japan. Why is online registration locked for Asia? She also told me she got an ad for testosterone pills inside the game. She wan't very happy at this, as she is security conscious and it looked like a malicious app. I don't have a Mac myself so I didn't see any ads (Windows version).

That made me reconsider and I'm going to stop to recommend this game to people I know (as I did for years). Care for any explanations? I worked in an open source foundation for a time, and one could consider me an open source promoter. Right now I am disappointed, as she blamed me for recommending her shady apps that are region locked.

Game does not have any ads, so that makes me doubt this entire post accuracy.

Wesnoth has no ads, neither in the game nor anywhere else. The game is completely free, there are also no restrictions on registration, I observe many players from different countries of the world including Asian countries such as China, Japan, India.

So in conclusion please check the information you receive and see where you download the game from. The Battle for Wesnoth is available on Steam for all platforms.

What download link did you give?

Not exactly - the account was created 12 hours ago.
Lexa04 wrote: August 12th, 2024, 11:54 am so you can't be a long-time player, let alone have been recommending Wesnoth for years.
In 2008 you could connect to the multiplayer server without any account at all, so that part of the story at least is plausible.

Assuming this is actually true, you probably sent a fake download link by accident. Information on officially dowloading and installing wesnoth can be found on https://www.wesnoth.org/ and https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth

The game is not region-locked and certainly does not include any ads on any version of the game, including macOS.

@Lexa04 I created my account 5 years after I started playing the game. As gnombat pointed out, this account was created 13 hours ago. It is quite possible to reccomend the game, create an account to play with someone, find that the game is not working as intended and make a forum post about it. While it is a bit strange for a long-time player to not know the game lacks ads on all versions, its not impossible. While this story may be very likely to be false, dismissing it entirely is a bit harsh, especially if it were to actually be true.

Yes, I made a mistake here. I didn't pay attention to p.m. and a.m. I'm sorry for that. I just edited my previous post

"not to mention the first thing i got was a ingame ad about testoserone pills"

That was what I was told. I can't verify it myself (I have no Mac and no access to a Mac), but this is a person I know for more than 3 years, so I'd rather trust her.

The game contains no ads and is not region locked. More likely is her PC is infected with malware.

This is probably the case. The link showed is official, and I don’t see how else this would happen.

She says that she cannot even enter the forums as the link to this forum cannot be viewed for her. So definitely something is locked.

Not an expert, but I belive this could still be cause by some kind of malware. The game is not region locked, as stated above by Pentarctagon.

If you mean the confirmation code for registering on the forums, a few e-mail providers are known for classifying our e-mails as spam and outright incinerating them (*cough* Outlook *cough*).
If you send a PM to the Forum Administrators group and tell us her nickname we can manually activate her account.

This is the link I sent.
Then this is what she should've seen:

Could it be that she saw a spam post on the forums? Usually we're pretty quick to ban them, but it can happen.

The forum is definitely not region locked. Since "the link to this forum cannot be viewed" could mean all sorts of things, the next logical step is to attach here a screenshot of what she actually sees on her browser.
There might be a browser add-on that's interfering, some malware (but there isn't much malware for Mac OS), some antivirus or firewall, a VPN (if she's using one) or even her ISP, her DNS server or her modem/router.

Is registration necessary for playing online though? I mean, from a technical point of view.

If not then perhaps a solution may be for one to be registered, e. g. Azradun, and then just
send out a guest invite that bypasses all problems of malicious spam or what not, without
mandating another registration. That way someone who is known (let's assume Azradun
is known) could get friends interested in the game, without them being confused about some
ads or spam (which would still be interesting to find out how she would have gotten that
ad or spam; Azradun was not extremely specific in that part, but guest-invitations would
not be wrong, IMO. With a direct invite no waiting-for-security-code should ever be an issue.
I registered for the webforum some 20 years ago, but nowadays it is somewhat rare that I
even want to register for any webforum account; it is just too much of a hassle to manage
all passwords with any of that or taking any steps for the actual registration. I became quite
lazy as I got older).

It is just for moderation purpose. If Azradun trusts others to play with his email, then he can create multiple accounts and give one to that other person.
