Re: Duncan's Sprite Gallery
It's been a while, has it not? Well, I've only been working on one thing (as people from discord can vouch) and that is finishing of my Rogue Mage line! Though these are not animated, I am happy with them for the time being. Without further ado here they are!

Re: Duncan's Sprite Gallery
And last, but not least a beautiful unit line
. Well that's it I guess! These guys have taken alot of work, but I'm so proud of the end result. As always feel free the use these in your UMC (with credit of course). The unit code can be found in liberty.viewtopic.php?p=690573#p690573 Curent Maintainer of Talentless Mage

Very good job! It's cool to watch you grow in your skills and create better and better sprites, but don't you think that the same hairstyle for all 3 levels of female version looks a little weird?

I also like it very much. As for the ideas, maybe over time the hair should become more untidy or just grayer? After all, shadow mages are outlaws and also practice black magic, which eventually destroys them

Re: Duncan's Sprite Gallery
I'm working on a new piece as I've hit an art block recently. It's not finished, but I feel like its at a presentable stage:

Re: Duncan's Sprite Gallery
Looks good, except for the left leg, which looks more like a ballerina pose than a strong combat stance.
Though I'm not sure it's better than the current one.

FWIW (I'm no artist), but as a work in progress it looks good IMHO.DuncanDill wrote: ↑July 3rd, 2024, 7:47 pm heavyinfantry.pngI'm working on a new piece as I've hit an art block recently. It's not finished, but I feel like its at a presentable stage:
Was it intentional to have colouring and armour style similar to swordsman/pikeman?
I think it works conceptually but might be less easy to differentiate these units on the battlefield.
Hadn't spotted the left leg stance but did feel that overall the unit didn't quite look armoured and threatening enough.
Also (sorry to nitpick) but I don't think an open faceplate works here; to me it looks as if the head armour on your HI is less complete than the swordsman's?
Could you make the armour more "businesslike"?
E.g. the raised neck guards look a bit too prominent and "delicate" for this unit IMHO.
The other thing is this is a slow moving unit and it looks rather too agile to me.
For me present version resembles a sort of Thug line alternative for the Wesnothian army (i.e. sits alongside swordsman and pikeman but inflicts impact damage) - that could be fun too; a more fragile, faster version of HI?
A few UMC campaigns use lawful Thugs and in some cases something like your unit might be an alternative?
Sorry if I sound critical, I like your unit and I'm just giving honest feedback - hope it helps.
Cheers!

Thanks alot for the feedback, and I see all your points. The colouring was specifically made to look more like these new types, as I always found it weird how these guys have little continuity with the rest of the loyalist army. I see your point with the armour though, and I will probably make it more angular and spiky. Your feedback is quite helpful, and I see your point with the helmet. I was wondering too, and maybe the closed would be better, or maybe I could fiddle about to try and keep it open, but still formidible...

Re: Duncan's Sprite Gallery
Looks good!
Teensy nit picks: the raised neck guards look slightly uneven?
I understand the neck/torso won't be level because the unit is leaning slightly, but to me they look a bit "mismatched"?
Either raise the guard over the shield or lower the other one maybe?
Also, maybe make the feet a bit chunkier?
(I thought the same of the original HI sprites as well - compare HI and Duelist sprite's feet and you'll hopefully see what I mean.)
Also, if you wanted to have some element of face on your unit, you could maybe have two beady eyes staring out of the helmet?
Without actually seeing this I can't say if it would be an improvement or not?
And your unit doesn't need that to work... so maybe I should just shut up...
Will you be doing sprites for combat, movement etc.?
I'd love to see an idle animation, off the cuff thoughts:
Sadly I don't currently have any immediate open slots for HI but doubtless I will (or can create one
) once I move on from this extensive chunk of work on LSB...
Again, looks good!
Cheers!

I'd love to see an idle animation, off the cuff thoughts:
- Drops mace on his foot, hops around maybe clutching foot?
- Or display impatience/belligerence by banging shield and mace together?
- Or something else - I'm sure you can get creative!

HI looks very nice, I like the light colored armour in the style of other loyalists, very good job!DuncanDill wrote: ↑July 6th, 2024, 5:55 am Finished up the heavy infantryman!heavyinfantry.pngheavyinfantry.png

I also like this very much. If I was king I’d use this as the mainline HI model and recycle the current HI model for a hero unit.
