Wesnoth joining Software in the Public Interest as an associated project

Post by Pentarctagon »

I'm happy to formally announce that Wesnoth has joined Software in the Public Interest (SPI, https://www.spi-inc.org/) as an associated project.

What this means is that SPI is now the legal entity responsible for keeping track of money donated to Wesnoth as well as Wesnoth's trademark rather than Wesnoth Inc. This was done in order to save money - SPI takes a 5% fee from donations made to Wesnoth which is significantly less than what it costs to have Wesnoth Inc's taxes filed. SPI also does not have any direct say in how the Battle for Wesnoth project is run, what features are developed, etc.

Additionally, since SPI is registered as a 501c3 non-profit charity, donations to Wesnoth are now tax deductible for donors in the US. Donations can also now be made via the Donate button on https://www.spi-inc.org/projects/wesnoth/.
