The wings look almost feathered now if you look closely, it makes her seem kind of angelic instead of fey-like. Why would she have spiderweb hanging from her wings?

Ah, so you cut your teeth on the Marathon Series as well, did you? Craig Mullins did some scary-good work for that series, that's for sure.
I love the new glowing dragonfly wings - very cool. The new face is "less cartoony", and I've already noted that I like cartoony, but it does fit in nicely with the rest of the new elves, so I'm contented.
A thing about the dust, though - are you going to be using halos to animate it so that it's constantly trailing off the wings? If not, I'm not certain that it will work, as it gives the Shyde a "frozen in time" appearance rather than the "standing still" appearance we need for our units.

Yeah. It should be noted that Craig's work is probably the number 1 reason I am doing what I am doing now. It was my inspiration for going into this field - what I *really* want to do, is to make a videogame that looks like a live-action version of his paintings.Sangel wrote:Ah, so you cut your teeth on the Marathon Series as well, did you? Ech, not quite. (Drat you, though - that's a really close guess.Sangel wrote:I love the new glowing dragonfly wings - very cool. The new face is "less cartoony", and I've already noted that I like cartoony, but it does fit in nicely with the rest of the new elves, so I'm contented.

Side note - I'm going to go after that arm distinction problem.

I know your style too well for something like that to slip past me, Jetryl.
Seriously, though, a delicate mist would be an extremely cool effect, emphasising the ethereal nature of the Shyde. It'd also be a tricky effect to get right, but I'm sure you'll be able to pull it off.

Well... yeah it makes her a bit different than other elves, but because the wings are so delicate (they should be of courseJetryl wrote:So, the GIANT, GLOWING DRAGONFLY WINGS don't make it original?

Heh, so go out, try to find some real bad punks (with colorful hair) and tell them they look childish... or better not - we would lost very good gfx artist.Jetryl wrote:I do not share the tastes in color that makers of games like the early Final Fantasy, or Secret of Mana, do. For all the good work in those games, I consider their color choices to be a childish, artistic sin.
The only thing that can make it childish in Your eyes, is that You rarely see such hair colors (and if, it's mostly on child's drawings).
Also green hair is often used in painting "forest creatures", and most of those i've seen are far from "childish". Maybe You just watch too much anime?

Anyway, it's Your choice, i just wanted to write my opinion. New image also looks very nice, but i liked green hair of old one.
GAAH!! a Heretic! Burn him! : POr too much boring Tolkien...

Personally I don't see how there could even be any debate at all about which Shyde looks better.....
Jetryl's Shyde is clearly a much finer work than any of the others, imho.
I think that if all proposals were being presented simultaneously, rather than Jetryl's new artwork competing against an entrenched one, no-one would even question Jetryl's being better.

I've just taken another look at the artwork, and whomever commented that the wings now look like "angel wings" rather than "dragonfly wings" may have a point. The new shading, combined with the old linework, could give the illusion of feathers.
The solution to that's simple enough, however - just change the pattern of the lines on the wings slightly so that it's more clear that wings are insect wings and not bird wings.
