Icons

Post by doofus-01 »

core/images/icons has a bunch of 60X60px images that are like attack-icons, but they are for more random things than swords, teeth, etc. I think they are just general resources. There are some helmets, for example. Here is another one. There will be more icons to follow, depending on how this goes.

Looks good, IMO, but I think the surface could appear a bit more metallic. Right now it seems a tad too grainy for metal, but maybe that's just me.

What vult said, and I also think the bottom of it is cast a little too deeply in shadow. Other than that this is great!

Icons like this are extremely welcome - they're a huge resource for modders.

Alright, I changed it to be less "granular" though I still wonder how accurate a lot of the references are. Neither Roman, Medieval, nor Ottoman times had 304 SST sheet metal, so I question a lot of the modern references with their brilliant, smooth, shiny metal
like this:
In any case, these are some helmet offerings.
EDIT: re-cropped the images to keep them in the frames

Yeah, I think the graininess and the slightly toned down highlights of the first one actually makes it look more metallic.

I'd note that having them pop out over the frames is a bit off-style compared to the rest of the attack icons.

Hrm, yeah... Not sure why I did that. I'll update the earlier images. Thanks.

I've got a two others, plus some variations.

They look very good. However, I think the silver buckler and the rusty targ are much too bright on the upper-right side. And the bag is too dark inside.

(Sorry for my mistakes if I made them.)

No need to apologize, pe_em. I agree about the bag, I'm not too proud of it. It was a touched-up of the base of the herb-bag, but the opening needs better shading. It still might be useful as a background.

As for the too-harsh lighting, I prefer it, though I can't claim it's a guaranteed improvement over the vague lighting of some other icons. We'll just have to see what the management says.

The herbs are sticking out of the frame on the herb bag.

Unless the game doesn't support that, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

It’s not about whether the game supports it or not, it’s a matter of style and consistency.

All of these are excellent, and should be committed immediately, IMO.

Agreed - for that reason, we'd like to avoid it (we may at some point in the future do the borders of these programmatically, and have only the core icon in the middle.

Sorry about the border thing, I'd forgotten about this. Here is a fixed herb-bag.png

Not that this required skill or effort, but if it helps, here is a blank frame for that:

I have a couple other images which may be useful, in the same spirit:
