Wiki spam

Post by rjaguar3 »

There's a lot of spam on the wiki's Recent Changes feed. I've already blanked one spam page at http://wiki.wesnoth.org/User:Joyce7344, but I don't know what to do about the others.

Maybe the wiki software is due for an update? Newer versions are usually better security-wise, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they contained better ways to thwart spam (captchas?)

Thanks for noticing that one, cKomuHKa! It seems to have come from the English page when the translation was created (copy-pasted and partially changed), from where it already has been removed. On this version, however, the link stayed.

Regarding the other spam pages, it is hard to deal with them. There is a lot.

Deleted. Except for the ones with presumably broken links:

There is more spam clogging up the RC feed. Unfortunately, I'm not able to delete it.

I can try putting together a script to parse the links to create one list of pages that an administrator can delete.

I have just disabled registration of new users in the wiki on zookeeper’s request.

Hopefully someone (most certainly not me) will sort this out.

Did you also disable password reset? I am unable to log on now (forgot my password) and now—when I'm learning and using the reference heavily—is the best time to make improvements, while I still remember what I found confusing. I'm much less likely to come back and make changes later, after I have "mastered" the code. :)

I don’t know about password resets — I only know I toggled the option to enable registration of new accounts from ‘true’ to ‘false’.

... and I just did it the other way around too, because we need GSoC applicants to be able to register wiki accounts.

If I had a way to delete pages, I would be willing to help.

I pushed a bunch of spam pages into [wiki]category:candidates for speedy deletion[/wiki], should someone get the urge to delete a bunch of pages.

I left the content in some pages because otherwise it might not be so obvious to the deleter that they are spam, but when the article title made that clear, I took out the contents (to remove the SEO the spammer seems to be after).
