[interface] Credits in surname.
In the credits, all sections are in forename. For example: the Music section appears like this.
(Forename order)
Aleksi Aubry-Carlson (Aleksi)
Doug Kaufman (dkaufman)
Gianmarco Leone (gmlion)
Jeremy Nicoll (jeremy2/eltiare)
Joseph Toscano (ZhayTee)
Mattias Westlund (West)
Ryan Reilly (Rain)
Stephen Rozanc (TreizeCouleurs)
Timothy Pinkham (TimothyP)
Tyler Johnson
But the order should be this.
(Surname order)
Aleksi Aubry-Carlson (Aleksi)
Tyler Johnson
Doug Kaufman (dkaufman)
Gianmarco Leone (gmlion)
Jeremy Nicoll (jeremy2/eltiare)
Timothy Pinkham (TimothyP)
Ryan Reilly (Rain)
Stephen Rozanc (TreizeCouleurs)
Joseph Toscano (ZhayTee)
Mattias Westlund (West)
(This thread should not be removed!)

Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
This is the first time I understood what were you talking about.
Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
Why sort by forename or surname? Why not sort by username? I expect it is by username that most of these people are best known, and thus such a sorting order would, I think, be the best of the three for those attempting, for whatever reason, to find specific people without having their computers do it for them.
Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
You will sort them by surname.
Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
To whom are you talking? Me? I am not a developer; I am merely a moderator. It is not my place to change the credits sorting order. Nor is it your place to demand that it be changed — you (and I, and Dugi) may politely request or suggest changes to Wesnoth, but not demand them.
I suggest that you explain why you think the credits entries should be sorted by surname.

Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
There is an rule how particles in Dutch can be in the last name part or not. Here is a sample.
Maarten Albrecht
Foppe Benedictus
Rico van Coevorden
Arne Deprez
Tobe Deprez
Koen Douterloigne
Alexander van Gessel (AI/AI0867)
Thomas Hugo de Groot
Bär Halberkamp (bumbadadabum)
Jon Jacobs
Floris Kint (Grimling)
Roger Koot
Lala
Joeri Melis
IJsbrand Oudshoorn
Roel Thijs (Roel)
Pieter Vermeylen (Onne)
Koen Vervloesem (koan)
Rob van der Vleugel
(Names in blue italics have no real name!)
In that case, you’ll change the credits sorting order into surname.

Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
If names are sorted by surname or forename depends of cultural background of each country. So while in english (and most western countries) names are usually sorted by surname, for example in Turkey or here in Portugal it is commonly the other way around.
Sorting by username or making sort order translatable appears to be the best choice. Either way, is it relevant?

Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
In Dutch, the names are sorted in the surname if it contains particles.
In Flemish, the names are sorted in the particle.
In Afrikaans, the names are sorted in particle.
In German, the name are sorted in the surname if it contains particles or in the particles.
You could want to add a new category called “credits”. Here is a sample of names containing particle: van de.
van de Meent, Remco (The Netherlands)
van de Pol, Frank (The Netherlands)
van de Streek, Martijn
Van de Wauw, Johan
van de Wiel, Felipe Augusto (Brazil)
(Names in red italics have none of the country values added. These are on the Contribution Community.)

Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
So what looks better:
Anonymus Whatever
Given Name Surname
Just A. Example
Lorem Ipsum
Nomen Ignotum
Zum Beispiel
Or:
Zum Beispiel
Just A. Example
Nomen Ignotum
Lorem Ipsum
Given Name Surname
Anonymus Whatever
As I hope to demonstrate here, sorting by first name means sorting by full name, and if you use full names (instead of "surname, given name), it is both easier to find a name and more aesthetically pleasing to have the entries sorted by the full entry, and not by the last word in the name.
Meanwhile I cannot see any benefit sorting by surname would bring. The credits serve no administrative purpose where the family would have any mayor importance.
I agree on the sentiment of having usernames taking dominance, so not:
Abc Def (Tyrannos)
Zyx Wvu (Omnivore)
but:
Tyrannos (Abc Def)
Zyx Wvu

After far too long an absence, I have returned.

Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
Which sorting system do you want for the contribution community section?
Word by word (recommended) or letter by letter (not recommended!).
The last name sort order looks better!

Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
I'd prefer sorting by username as well.

Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
You’d take the usage of sorting in surname.
Maarten Sanderil is the incorrect; Maarten Sander is the correct.
And watch out for ignoring the symbols ' and - on Windows collation sorting.
The credits list might be sorted in surname and not on username.

Not everyone has a username in the credits.Pentarctagon wrote:I'd prefer sorting by username as well.
I really find this whole idea unnecessary. Alphanumeric sorting is the lowest common denominator, and for names from languages using non-Latin scripts there are conventions regulating their transliteration to the Latin script. Anything else is overcomplicating things.

Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
Sorting in surname can be done in Excel.
Re: [interface] Credits in surname.
So you expect the devs to export all the contributors, import them into Excel, sort, export/import again and then do some testing to see there are no errors introduced in the process? And to do that with every release? Sorry, but that's just not practical at all.
If we changed the sorting, it would have to be coded in Wesnoth itself, and someone would need to spend time program and test this.
