Favorite multiplayer unit per type(melee, magical, cav, etc)

Post by maredi316 »

I always wanted to know what others feel are the best functioning unit(or just like the best) out of all that function somewhat similarly. I guess reasons as well if possible?
Types:
Melee-the ones to hold lines and the all-purpose ones to always call
Ranged-the ones to take out infantry and melee oriented units
Scouts-the ones that are fast and good for capturing villages, but not really useful in combat.
Cavalry-the ones that are fast and expensive, and can fight in fronts
Magical-the ones that are weak but are indispensable when taking units out of villages
Navy-the ones that do well in water but nowhere else
Armor-Slow, usually expensive and always strong against physical damage
Support-uses special abilities and attack bonuses to screw that unit(shaman, assassin, ulf, etc.)
I hope this covers all the types, and if people place a single unit in multiple categories, (Dwarven fighter in both melee and armor and )it shouldn't matter

Melee: Elvish Fighter or Dwarf Fighter.
Ranged: Elvish Archer for damage output or Orcish Archer for damage types.
Scouts: Elvish Scouts. VERY fast. Become useful for combat at level 2.
Cavalry: Horseman (different damage types when levelled or more damage output) or Wolf Rider (max level have either slow or poison).
Magical: Any.
Navy: Mermen.
Armor: Dwarvish Guardsman.
Support: Orcish Assassin (I count Elvish Shaman as magical as both their level up paths have magic attacks).

In your topic heading you say "favorite unit" but in your text you say "best unit". Which do you mean? If we are talking favorites, then this doesn't have much to do with strategy or tips, merely popularity. If you mean actual best at their roles, I think that depends far too much on the situation to have a meaningful, strategic discussion. Just an example of the top of my head looking at MRDNRA's scout choice: Elvish Scout is great, but what if you're underground? Would not a Ghost be better? What if the map is enormous? Perhaps Bats? What if the map is mostly plains? Perhaps Cavalry?

As you can see, there are WAY too many variables in a given situation to pick a "best" in each category. Arguments could reasonably be made for any unit, in fact; it would just depend on the right circumstances. So there really is no "best" and what you're looking for is just the most popular.

The thing is, I feel that albeit most units have a time to shine and time to become a piece of crap, I am sorry about the language, but there are certain units that seem to shine in more occasions compared to others. This is somewhat dependent on the style of the player and the map, but for example, I feel cavalryman almost always fares better than the vampire bat. Sure, the bat can see further and fly to get anywhere, but it's 13 gold for something virtually incapable of any form of combat and can be killed with 1 lucky mage. On the contrary, the cav is insanely slow in forest and cave, and is not as fast as the bat. But, it's a great defense unit(especially against undead and northies, unless they chuck goblins), capable of simple assault tactics and will ensure dead enemies, for the expense of 4 more gold to the bat. If I want to state another unit, the wolf rider is worse than the bat or the cav to me. 17 gold, only as fast as the cav, gets hindered by terrain and also has no hp, no firepower (6-3 at night is a piece of crap, honestly), and worst of all, no resistances.
As one can see here, there are units that are more often better compared to others from my point of view. I also feel that although the strength of any unit can be justified, there are more instances where it can be justified for some and less for others

WR is not a bad unit. Not counting the fact that he's the only scout of Northerners (excepting maybe an assassin with quick trait), you seem to forget that this guy level up faster than all other scouts (an intelligent one needs only two kills, and with his 3 strikes and fast movement, it's not so difficult to finish some hard-wounded unit). The L2 options are, in my opinion, the best for a scout (with the ghost) : 9-4 at night with 49 HP or a versatile utility unit (fire, slow, range) + 1 extra MP. Last but not least, they are the only mounted unit with no pierce weakness, and they have a quite-good 50% def in villages.

But here are my favourites :

Melee : Spearman. 9-3 pierce during day and a range retaliation for 14g is awesome.
Ranged : Orcish Archer. When you are playing Northerners, you always thanks Grunkshkgroungk for creating this little fellows.
Scouts : A quick Drakefighter ;)
Cavalry : "the ones that are fast and expensive, and can fight in fronts." Mmmh, I don't see other unit than horseman or gryphon rider to get into this category.
Magical : Dark Adept, because they shoot lightnings like Palpatine.
Navy : Naga L2. They can leave the water.
Armor : HI for the surprise that you can do when recruiting one if you don't fight UD. With 20g, players usually buy a mage. Hoping for quick and/or fearless traits.
Support : Elvish Shaman. I like slowing units, and their healing is in synergy with the low-hp elves ; they have great options of levelling, but it's anecdotic since it's maybe the hardest unit to level up. Choosing a unit in this category was a difficult question, because I'm also in love with Fencer and Thief.

In my playing style, I recruit often WC and Goblins, but they're not really melee or support units.

Favorites for general usage (I take it you mean level 1):
Melee-Wose
Ranged-Dwarvish Thunderer
Scouts-Drake Glider
Cavalry-Cavalryman
Magical-Mage (if level two non-standard recruits were allowed then Troll Shaman)
Navy-Mermaid initiate
Armor-Troll Whelp (They DON'T DIE )
Support-Ulf or Elvish Shaman (depending on the situation)

Hi all, as you see this is my first post. No matter, i think, but...

As for the favorite units:

Melee: Skeleton
This guy owns many melee units (except the ones using impact) and literally chops up archers (but orcish ones)

Ranged: Orcish Archer
This guy is VERY versatile and comes in very handy amost in every situation, except against the rare unit that resists pierce and fire/has a strong ranged attack. Massacres woses even at day.

Scout: Ghost
It is hard to kill, especially at melee, and it may heal on enemy units while grabbing village. When leveled, they are truly fearsome.

Cavalry: Horseman
Maybe a pitiful defender, but this guy EATS archers and magi.

Magical: Dark Adepts
Good for taking over contested positions, with a nice 49% probability to do max damage (24 at night). And the 16(19)-2 against drakes is sticky.
Adepts kill mages at night. Mages hurt adepts at day.

Navy: Nagas
4 strikes for a level 1 is nothing to be taken lightly (yeah, the elf has also 4, but not a navy). Also, they are faster than mermen and quick ones may equal cavalry (in water).

Armor: Heavy Infantryman
This guy eats skeles and griffons, while being almost immune to orc grunts (not to orcish archers, they are weak to fire)
I dont like dwarves at all, they have all too low defenses.

Support: Ghoul
Really useful to hold villages, and their melee poison will screw many units (such as grunts) that may be easily be taken out by their allies the DA's in next turn.

As you may have seen, my fav faction is undead.

Melee-Spearman
Ranged-Elvish Archer
Scouts- Elvish Scout
Cavalry- Horseman
Magical- Mage
Navy-Mermen look better on paper but Nagas always seem to win. Or maybe that's just BoP talking...
Armor-HI
Support-Theives

Melee- Orcish grunt. Lot of HP, mediocre defense, good movement, cheap. Nothing fancy only raw power.
Ranged- Elvish archer. Fast, reliable, great defensive unit.
Scout- Footpad. Because it's so hard to kill.
Magical- Saurian augur. Fast, 3 attacks, easy to level, stops poison, good defense, cheap. The damage output is low but I prefer the durability and cheap price.
Fish- Naga. Fast, neutral aligment. I like it because of the higher sight range compared to other fish because it can't be outswimmed.
Tank- Ghoul. Good resistances and poison.
Specialist- Ulfserker. The fear of ulfs is enough to win games.

This became list I think are the best because I like units which perform the best :)

Tough question. These, however, are very good:

Melee - Spearman - Best all-around rank-and-file in the game.
Ranged - Orcish Archer - Most options of any archer
Non-Flying Scout - Cavalryman - Most staying power of any scout.
Non-Scouting Cavalry - Horseman - Charge is useful.
Magical - Mage - Do I need a reason?
Swimmer - Merman Hunter - It has both melee and ranged, and can advance to a Netcaster and gain slow.
Flier - Ghost - It can become a Wraith!
Armor - Troll Whelp - It regenerates.
Support - Orcish Assassin - Poison is always useful.
Spammer - Walking Corpse - It has plague

I took the liberty of modifying one or two categories and adding two, fliers and spammers, that really shouldn't have been left out.

But once the Khalifate gets added:

Melee - Spearman - Best all-around rank-and-file in the game.
Ranged - Rami - Less options than the Orcish Archer, but he makes up for it in speed.
Flier - Falcon - A cheap flying scout, also useful to distract the AI from other, more valuable units!
Armor - Troll Whelp - It regenerates.
Support - Hakim - It heals. And it has a decent melee attack. And it can advance to a Tabib and gain both cures and regenerates!
Spammer - Walking Corpse - It has plague

Well, yes, I do like the Khalifate.

Khalifate are great! I'd have to say the only switches I'd make though were:
Hakim to replace the Elvish Shaman
Falcon to replace the Drake Glider

Yeah I thought I wanted share my opinions as well
Melee-Spearman-pure badass. The 7-3 firststrike is a great source of firepower unless against undead, and slays cav. Economical. Or Drake Clasher-tank. Machine gun. call it whatever It's overpowered attack of 6-4 firststrike is a terror to all.
Ranged-Elvish Archer-high damage output with the possibility of dexterous is appealing. Also not super-expensive.
Cavalry(together with scouts because there is basically no difference between them)-Drake Fighter or Cavalryman-not super expensive, and good enough to scout and hack.
Magical-Mage-Dark Adepts were close, but the mage has 3 shots, and also does more damage output. Also, has(albeit crappy)melee so that melee unit with 3 hp doesn't kamikaze into it.
Navy-Merman Fighter-these guys don't get much action, so them having more hp to defend villages is more important than firepower
Aerial-Ghost-quite appealing in the sense that by placing it on a village, it is hard to kill
Armor-Troll Whelp. Only cheap armor unit. Cannot assault at all, but can protect and live long.
Fencer-Forces all those wounded units to assault instead of retreat for they can't run away. Has better evasion than Saurians on flat
