Re: Vulcan Portraits
To add to Frogger5's comment: in the real world, firearms have existed since the 12th century. Yet, every soldier were far from being equipped with a gun before several centuries had passed and you didn't see cannons before, what, the 17th or 18th century?
Also, Wesnoth is not realistic when compared to the real world. Indeed, as you have pointed out, walking trees and such. It is realistic with itself, however: it is coherent. This is called suspension of disbelief: people are ready to let pass a certain amount of gibberish as being part of the universe, but if it becomes too much (i.e. underground trees or vulcan drakes) or if it contradict itself, the world is not believable anymore, and our interest fades. As it stands, Vulcan do not fit with Wesnoth (to the best of my knowledge), and even if Powershot said they were totally unrelated to Wesnoth (other eras have done this, Era of magic, for instance), his world would be on the brink of being too incredible to be believable...
Although (and this is not meant to offend you in any way, Powershot), as far as I know you are a kid (not of very old age, although I couldn't say exactly). How can anybody expect this to be on par setting-wise with some other stuff produced by much older, more mature and experienced people? I did pretty cheesy or unbelievable stuff too until up to, what, 14-15 years old? I think it's still cool you're being creative and learning some skills as you go, even if your work might be condemned to be a bit overlooked by the community.
That being said, it still depends on your goal. Taking a few cues from the community and changing a few of your ideas might be to your advantage. Or maybe you don't care about the reception your work gets. (Once again not meant to hurt you) Maybe Vulcans are just meant to be overpowered-everything-already-in-Wesnoth so you can feel good about the game. It's a pretty elegant way of cheating, much more than just using debug mode, after all. And cheating is not bad per se: I myself often cheat in single player, I admit it. And surely I'm not the only one. As said pretty much everywhere else, play the game the way you enjoy it. If it is with overpowered Vulcans, so be it. If it is with debug mode, so be it. If it is without any cheating/loading/recruiting/whatever, so be it.

Re: Vulcan Portraits
Ok, I'm going to prehaps foolishly, wade into this thread.
The backstory you had made little to not sense (underground trees because their advance..... really?
You race is simple an off shot of elves, mixed with Vulcans from Star Trek. Not staggeringly original, but that could work.
I'd go with a simpler background, such as they descended from a less emotional group of elves who left Wesnoth ages ago, or such, and focused on mixing archery with magic. This is simple, less confusing and easier to swallow.
The Vulcan drake is a little silly, lets be honest. How many lizards with a human body and black hair do you see? Rather than claiming "Its genetics", mentioning that the breeding process involves careful amounts of magic to create a stable body or such might be a better idea. Or simply ditching that unit.
Also don't ignore feedback when your starting out. Hope this helps

Re: Vulcan Portraits
Maybe the Vulcan-Drakes could be Vulcan heros who are mortally injured in battle and have their heads grafted to drake bodies by Vulcan biomagi? It'd make far more sense than them being the offspring of Vulcans and drakes.
Re: Vulcan Portraits
One idea (created in the process of joking) was that the vulcan species consisted of ambulatory heads that parasited onto other living bodies after they were decapitated. If you've played Dead Space, think Divider Head. This would make them not only a form of undead, but also an evil infectious plague which would explain the rest of Wesnoth's antipathy towards them.
It would also explain why all Vulcan graphics are basically the same heads pasted onto mainline sprites, which I suppose would be a great boon for the faction.

OFF TOPIC POST:
May I engage in act of divination? How about we:
>cool down
>stop joking of vulcans backstory, since it's slowly getting old
>stop derailing the thread
>take backstory discussion out of Art Workshop, and offer friendly discussion and constructive comments on vulcans topic (there's one, as I remember? Unless it got locked...) instead of unneeded sarcasm and jokes?
What can I say? Powershot is a troll. Willing or not, doesn't matter - he somehow manages with creation of another annoying topic and posting few frankens turn whole forum into bunch of venomous bile monsters.
It's pretty incredible to see. I've never seen such thing on any forum. Yes, those frankens ARE bad. Yes, those portraits ARE bad. Yes, this backstory sucks... But it's nothing to make such fuss about. Isn't it enough to say "Powershot, your portraits, units and whole faction are really bad at this stage. You need either stop doing it, stop posting it here or seriously rethink it" rather than this?
Calm. Down. People.
Someone says it's insensitive to Powershot? I don't care. IMO, it's LESS insensitive than turning every his thread into sarcasm mudslinging exercise. It slowly gets [acronym=-Hey, It's Powershot! -Let's throw some sarcasm at him!]boring[/acronym].
Somehow I get feeling that I am going to be the one locked... Nevermind.

Sorry, I had to. Obviously, you are right ShiNoBoDy. Come on guys, let's get out of here.

Re: Vulcan Portraits
For what it's worth, I actually think that head-parasites wouldn't be a bad idea to explore, at least.
But, yeah, it's powershot's call as to whether he'll take advice given. Shoving more of that down his throat if he doesn't want it is, I guess, a problem on our end.The most I can really do is to try to explain my view on the matter, and I suppose at this point I've done that as well as I could.
So... right. Not much more for me to say then. Hope all goes well.

How meta!Zerovirus wrote:One idea (created in the process of joking) was that the vulcan species consisted of ambulatory heads that parasited onto other living bodies after they were decapitated.

It's spelled "definitely", not "definately". "Defiantly" is a different word entirely.
Re: Vulcan Portraits
I like Zerovirus idea a lot ! It both explain art and evil chaotic race ! And it's really original !
@ ShiNoBoDy : Yes, Powershot design is pretty bad... For now, but he can improve it and certainly will if he keep is creative state of mind.
Maybe a moderator can split this thread to protect the original art thread, but it will take time
For me, I only want to give advices on how he can upgrade his story (which is easier to do I think).

Spoiler:
Underground trees would be possible if they got energy from another power source besides the sun. Besides, nobody every questions moving trees with movable arms and eyes popping out of them.
Vulcan drakes happen when a Vulcan and a ice drake have children, and the child survives with the help of a bunch of wizards.
If you're not convinced keep to your advanced dwarves elves with wings.

The art is within the attempt itself. There would never be improvement if there had never been attempts.
