Re: Browse the forums with World Cup Atmosphere
The Football World Cup is currently taking place in South Africa. Apparently, the favoured crowd noise-maker in said nation is not a trumpet or air horn, but rather a "vuvuzela" - a plastic device that makes a sound akin to a swarm of bees or hornets. The sound has thus become the steady backdrop to most World Cup matches, provoking much comment amongst followers of the sport.artisticdude wrote:I... don't get it?

Ah. Okay, now I get it. Thanks for the explanation. =)

Re: Browse the forums with World Cup Atmosphere
Honestly, they are no more annoying than lots of other noisemaking contraptions that people have been dragging to sports events for decades. I remember as a kid going to hockey games where fans had enormous plastic trumpets that sounded like air horns ... man they could split your skull they were so loud! Vuvuzelas are awful too, but somehow they have become the only thing anyone wants to talk about.

Re: Browse the forums with World Cup Atmosphere
People have an innate desire to make noise, and the louder and more obnoxios the better. Why? I should think to attract the attention of others, in most cases at least.

It's nice. Many websites are using something like that currently.
By the way, Argentina impressed me a lot in the game vs. South Korea. Messi is wow!

Re: Browse the forums with World Cup Atmosphere
...Hmmm, the Vuvuzela.
Living presently in the republic of Worldcupia, I am planning to make my fortune carting away the millions of surplus vuvuzelas and S.A flags after the world cup is finished. I would have bought cheap plasitc earmuffs and sold them at obsence prices once the noise started, but I didn't think of that in time.
History: the vuvuzela was originally made of dried kelp (sometimes covered in tin-foil) it may have originated on Robin Island where the famous South African president and statesman Nelson Mandela was incarcerated.
Also, there are about three tunes you can play on those blasted things, that's it.
I've never played a vuvuzela, nor do I aspire to. I played soccor and quite enjoyed it, but I don't see the point in supporting competative sports and don't care if my team looses.
So why is the guy who advocates crazy fun so morose all of a sudden?
Simple. I want to party when everybody else has finished partying. I'll wait till 05:00 in the morning, about three months after the world cup has finished and then I'll start playing the vuvuzela loudly and letting off fireworks, etc...
-it's only a disorder if you get caught.
