Glest Advanced Engine

Post by johndh »

I'm sure many of you are at least somewhat familiar with the free, open-source, 3D, real-time strategy game Glest. In case you're not, I'm including a link and some screenshots below. What you may not know about is the Glest Advanced Engine (GAE) currently under development. This project has already made some great strides in improving the game, such as an improved pathfinder, new lua scripting capabilities, improved multiplayer, and other new gameplay features and enhancements, as well as many "under-the-hood" improvements. Feel free to check it out, and we would be happy for more people to become involved whether it is by programming with C++, creating mods, testing or improving documentation, etc.

I just started playing this game about a month ago. I really enjoy playing it. I was rather disappointed that it didn't have a map editor/maker for mac and that the recent releases haven't been for mac, but maybe one day...

The only thing I didn't like about the actual gameplay is that there are too few upgrades etc (In my opinion) But, I understand that this game is in the making and is being constantly improved. Good luck to the Glest team! :D

(Unfortunately I do not know how to program or use blender, so, I can't be of much help. :( )
Check out the FOSS game Sumwars
Wish I had more time for composing music...

How ironic; I started playing this a few days ago… Also, I'm pretty much in the same boat as Telaron…

All of the source is available and there has been success in compiling older versions of the classic Glest (pre-GAE) on OS X, so really the only problem in that regard is that we don't have any Mac users available to compile new versions for us. :hmm:

I might have to keep that in mind for the faction I'm working on. ;)

Well, yes and no. The members of the original Glest team have gone on to other projects, so development of the original Glest engine stopped at Glest 3.2.2, back in 2009. GAE is a community-driven fork/continuation of that engine. There is also a ton of user-generated content, like maps, scenarios, tile sets, and tech trees (think "eras") floating around on the forum, most of which is backwards-compatible with older versions of Glest.
