retouche of existing art
I tried a few things. It is a good learning experience. I would share a piece probably less controversial as these are not ment to offend the artist. There is this slightly older mermaid initate. I tried to get it in line with the rest. I expanded the fish body and added a tail and a hand from other mermaids (frankenstein). I tried to match the color and changed the perspective. The picture might have to get scaled down to fit in the regular size. If there is some positive feedback I might post more. It is no where close to perfect, but I have no more ideas how to fix it. It is actually a good exercise to alter the art. It makes you appriciate the skills of our artists. Transparent is really tricky.

I think that's actually pretty good - they're similar enough that I would consider them part of the same line.
The only issue is that the scepter does need more definition, as the others have said.

Thanks, for pointing out this blur issue. It might have happend due to expansion and change of perspective. I do not have any intention to get this stuff in the game. It is more an exercise for me.

Re: retouche of existing art
Great work!
I don't think you should pay much attention to what I write as it's a personal preference, but I think the colours are way too satured. I'd tone them down, and I'd also make her spots/pattern (i.e. on her left arm) more subtle/darker/toned down, as I've done with one of them hasty to give you an idea.
Again, this is just a matter of personal taste. I'm weak for the middle-sister in the family picture you included in the top post, and think her colouring is great.
Keep on practicing and sharing. I agree with it being good training, best way is usually "learning by doing" and facing "real problems".

Re: retouche of existing art
I think Kitty is planning to give the Initiate some attention one of thesee days - but it's not a high priority, because the current portrait is good.

Re: retouche of existing art
Not an artist, but the thing that jumped out at me is that a lot of the definition in the face is done with thick lines, whereas in kitty's portraits (especially the Enchantress, which is quite possibly my favorite of hers) it's done with shading. This is especially noticeable around the nose, and gives it more of the cartoon-like quality that was so prevalent in older releases. Not that there's anything wrong with it, Wesnoth just seems to be moving away from that. Her eyes are pretty big and close together, too, which might be adding to that feeling.
Also, this is a personal opinion but the right shoulder and arm don't have the same delicate look as the others. It's thicker and more muscular; give her a spear and I'd buy her as a melee unit. Maybe it's just the shading though - there's far more going on in mainline.
Overall though, this is a cool idea and she looks good so far. A side-by-side with the original would've been interesting for comparison, too.

Re: retouche of existing art
Thanks for pointing me to the hue. I like the darker blue spot. I will use eyerouge's version in my private version of wesnoth.
Here is the comparison of what I did to the original.

Re: retouche of existing art
I just noticed a version of this beeing used in 1.13.6.
This made it to mainline after almost 7 years. Please keep in mind that there is awesome linework from 2012 which never got colored.
The fishbody was lifted fron the enchantress together with the right hand. The fishtail was donated by the hopelite. So Kitty should get some credits too.
There were 2 fellows talking about the staff. I included that point by reducing the perspective impact on the staff.
Especially for eyerouge I added blue make up for all the freakles and reduced the hue.
Moreover I downsized the thing to match our 400x400 canvas size. The lady is now matching the other women of the tribe in size. (I scaled 500 to 380 and put it back on 400x400 in the lower right corner)
So please feel free to use this file:

Re: retouche of existing art
Wouldn't the current "Intiate (or whatever) 2" be better?
Not very active on the forum anymore, but I still read it, and I also still play Wesnoth and draw a bit.
Re: retouche of existing art
They've both been in for a really long time, so I don't see any reason to start deleting one in favor of the other now, or even switching the default portrait for the unit type.
Re: retouche of existing art
The desicion came from Kitty. The argument was that No2 does not have the staff. If you disagree you could rename the files on your harddrive for your personal entertainment.
