Congrats, those are some really nice thoughts about the tutorial. I think it would make it considerably better.

I agree it would make things better. However a few comments.

I personally like the option to skip killing the extra dummies, because I found killing them to be incredibly boring.

I think that unless a player did focus several dummy kills to one unit, he'll have a hard time getting an elvish captain by fighting ruffians.

You could lower the experience necessary to promote to something like 30% or 50%, just for the sake of learning about promotes...

Maybe give the leader enough income to recruit several ruffians each turn? Then cut that income the moment the first fighter advances to captain.

But what if the player fails to promote a unit?

And a random word to add - when I was a new player, I didn't recognize the single hex of shallow water as bad terrain -- the river looked bad, but that just looked like a mini-puddle.
