Wesnoth Reference Poster

Post by ancestral »

I know I can come off intense at times. I get passionate about things I care about, of which some would seem trivial at best. But it's good when I can work through why and often, as a result, really good things can happen. For example, I was frustrated in a thread where someone proposed we make a MMORPG for Wesnoth and that ended up me discovering that we have an incredible opportunity to write, paint, or otherwise make new pieces of work about Wesnoth.

The latest case that got under my skin was the unit section in the Help menu not showing all units. (Heh, yeah, really small things again.) Other games that also don't do however have cool color posters with lots of awesome information on them.

So yeah, I'm going to work on that poster! :)

For now I'm just focusing on the main/default era. Obviously http://units.wesnoth.org will be the first place for me to look. Plus, certainly it'll need to have:
  • Abilities
  • Traits
  • Terrain types
  • Recruitment lists
What are some other things that would be good to include?

Actually, you might not have a bad idea, there - I think that a poster (or series thereof, one for each faction) at reasonable scale (say, units at maybe double their screen size, for easy reading), with unit information, descriptions, stats, and a short description of the game and faction/species at the top would be cool to have.

We needs ourselves a merch department, perhaps.

I wouldn't mind paying $10 $15 $20 for a nice portrait, silkscreened onto a T-shirt with "The Battle for Wesnoth" on the back.

I wonder if you can use the art from the game to "pimp" that poster.
Fear the pixel art is way to small to look good on a regular poster size. :hmm:
But it's definately a good idea in general. If it looks good I would print/buy one probably.

There used to be one at cafepress. The link doesn't seem to be working (for me) at the moment (got it from fmunoz's signature. I think it was fmunoz that set it up and maintained it).

Looks like 5 years ago there was talk of making T-shirts and issues came up since the portrait art wasn't very big and required creating new vector art.

But in the last few years we've gotten some much better art and pretty decent-sized images.

This looks a little outdated: http://www.cafepress.com/wesnoth

Okay, I wasn't aware of that…

Well, I guess you could always do "business" with Vistaprint

Some progress.

I plan on somehow incorporating some stats. Yet to figure that out. A box somewhere, maybe with some numbers in some shapes.

But I like the top-down design, and yes, the arrows have slightly whimsical edges.

Will finish for each faction, and then try to put it onto the sheet. My goal is to have it take up 1/3 to 1/2 of the poster.

Please, PLEASE don't do anything with the drakes until their sprites have been updated...

And personally, I think a left-to-right design makes more sense for a poster in English. We read that way, after all.

This is a living poster and it's far from finished. There'll be endless time for changes. :)

H'm, I kind of like the top-to-bottom alignment. It reminds of Age of Empire's tech tree. ^^

Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
