Re: Outlaws! Trapper

Post by kitty »

that's how i always bind my scarfs if i cover my face up - first wrap it tight around your face, then around your neck, this way you can put your mask down and up again without problems.
but i'll darken one side a bit to make it more 3d, thanks for the hint.

Kitty, I think your portraits have reached the point where they are no longer a representation of the game units on a "bigger scale"... they ARE the units, just as much as the sprites themselves, both in artistic value and spirit. The impression I get is that sprite and portrait become an inseparable entity the moment you create each one of these, as if they were made by the same person at the same time with the same idea in mind.

Sorry for the useless praise, but I'm simply amazed this is being achieved.

I'm not sure what his outfit is - is he wearing some form of armour?

I'm not sure I much like his hat - he's wearing a heavy wool cloak and hood, so he doesn't really need it, and the design of it looks too much like a modern beanie hat - it gives me an unfortunate impression of a tramp/hobo. Which has its parallels with the ranger, but I think he should look a bit more... old-fashioned. Maybe a touch younger in the face, too.

Nice start, but it certainly needs something different, I feel.

Most Trappers or those who work outside do not have beards. Of course this is artistical freedom but these slightly breaks it for me.
That's the only thing that disturbs.

FWIW, I really like the ranger the way he is, he has a lot of character.

I take you've never experienced -25° C then? ;)

Same here, don't know why he shouldn't have a beard... I'll agree with tsi about the coat though, looks like armour-padded wool. Of course it's hard to see what's going on without the texture and stuff.

Or -40 for that matter. I had a similar thought, but didn't have the heart to speak it out. Also, hoods become pretty much good for nothing when there's even a slight wind in temperatures like that.

heh, thanks for your quick comments!

quick variant with a more medieval hat. (the german word is »bundhaube«, but i couldn't find the english equivalent :( ) i think this way he is more clearly medieval, but on the other hand this kind of hat always seems slightly comical to me.

tsi: new hat on your suggestion. his outfit is not intended as a gambeson but as a simple leather jerkin, i think shading will make that clear. and i don't think that he needs to get younger - he's a l3...
wayfarer: i don't really understand your problem with the beard. i just want to keep it to keep him as far from aragorn as possible ;)
west: thanks :)
girgistian: brr, that sounds way too cold!

Bingo, that averts the impression I had nicely. Good stuff.

jimmy approves this hat because now both kitty and jimmy can walk with the ranger
- one leprechaun hanging on the left and one on the right!

I think the drawing looks great, I would perhaps make his clothes look more rugged. They look a bit too new. Perhaps a stitch here and there. To me, a ranger spends his life on muddy roads. I look forward to seeing the finishing touches.

Indeed, the arm seems to come down from the shoulder to the elbow at one angle, then the arm forearm seems to go out away from the body(to the left) only to come forward to grasp the bow as if the forearm came out straight from the elbow.

I like the whole thing! The vest thingy doesn't look like armor to me, just really warm! I go camping a lot and it almost looks like I'd want to wear it! lol I also liked the color of the first hat more than the second. (I liked the first hat better as a whole but mostly because of the color I think)

Anyway, nice job kitty.
