Desktop icon for the dev-release

Post by tsr »

Ok, so something that has bugged me for a while is that the stable-releases and the development-releases have the same icon. This makes it so that I have to think when clicking on the icon which version I want to use and which 'button' is what.

I just made this to use for the dev-releases instead (possibly there might be something wrong with it since I used the 'smudge'-tool and maybe there is a limit in amount of color that can be used, or something similar, I don't know).

I think it's distinctive and similar enough for the purpose, comments?

A different icon strikes me as a good idea, but the execution of that one is...somewhat flawed.

What about using our current icon, just with a dwarvish hammer over it? :P

The idea of having a separate icon for the dev version ... eh. If you really want one, sure. I'll help out.

The idea behind your specific version; that being the wesnoth logo, with chunks missing from it, is .. okay... but your execution of it is pretty bad.

My idea would be to take the wesnoth shield, remove the crossed swords, and then have just the shield sitting there, with a couple of obviously work-related tools next to it. I don't yet know how they'd be arranged, that depends largely on the shape of the tools I use for it. I'll see if I can deliver on this later tonight - depends if my batteries charge up right for my camera.

I'll note also two things: We should -not- bother with a separate icon for the map editor dev release. That's just being silly. If we do, I suppose the same idea would apply as to regular wesnoth for an icon.

Also, we need an icon for the server. My simple idea would be to take the silhouetted icon for the shield (as seen on the map editor icon), and apply it like a decal to some icon of a generic looking computer tower. If someone could find an icon of a generic-looking computer tower which we'd have legal rights to use for this, that would be dandy.

Generic-looking computer tower (if you remove the tools) from the program Pureadmin (gpl)

I'm too lazy to draw this, but I imagine if you had clockwork gears in the cutaway parts of the shield, it would look very cool. 8)

An svg containing that icon can be found here: "network-server.svg". It's part of the Tango icon library.

My google attempts failed, but yes, that does look better and SVG is quite useful in this case.

Ahh didnt notice that it was a tango icon.
That mean it is under a creative commons license, which would work but it is unnecessary complicated with a extra license.
Here is a simple icon that is guarantied to be under the GPL (because i just made it  )

For the dev-release icon, I like lizard's concept. It may need a few touch-ups, though (and remove the ugly text from it).
