The eyes are asymmetrical, especially the pupils. The placing of the iris/pupil is also rather odd.

Not so much the eyes as the pupils, they look like he's mildly deranged.
Fear me! For I am higher level than you!

Anir, why don't you try to even out the eyes, but I think you might be on the right track for Irrev's goblin faction (with proper shading and so forth)

Just to clarify: that was not an official suggestion, it was me trying to poach an artist to work on my faction. :) It seemed a win-win since you sounded like you might be looking for some practice.

Some thoughts on the picture:
* It has character. I like the way the eyes are a bit shifty looking and his right ear is cocked slightly.
* I agree with the others re: the pupils.
* His head looks a little low. Goblins are stubby, but IMO he'd look better with a bit of a neck.
* The straps for the backpack are a good idea, and a good example of extrapolating details that aren't in the sprite. A little of the backpack should probably be visible over his shoulder.
* The way he's holding the knife looks awkward, like it's off at an angle from his fist.

A couple of design things:
* You could make the knife a little bigger. They use it for hacking their way through shrubbery in the forest. It's basically a machette in function though the "hunting knife" design you've used is good.
* He's dressed simply and unadorned. I likes - that's appropriate for a Level 0 unit.
* Since they're supposed to be an endearing faction, maybe play with making the eyes a bit bigger? (Your call on this one).

Do you mind if I make modifications to your art? I'm not very good at creating art but I love to tweak existing art.

Thanks.

I attach the svg file along here then so you can mess around with that to and the head and knife is grouped but unsure how that works in other programs then inkscape if it follows along as well.

Did one image to show that its easy to change position and size with the svg leave it up to you to figure out witch one that would be

The svg file is compressed with gzip else it wouldn't let me attach it to the post.

Maybe should write about the changes I did :)
  • Increased the eye size
  • Messed around with the pupils tho I never really understood what was wrong so it might still be wrong they are the same size now and more in the middle of the colored part of the eye ( forgot the word )
  • Added a neck
  • Decided not to include the backpack since a backpack thats visible from the front like that has to be huge ( took a pic of my self with one just to make sure ( and no you aint gona see that ) ) those backpacks sure do exist but I dont see a goblin wearing them while hacking away throw tick forrest and digging around for things but if you insist again I will try to add one
  • Changed the knife angle to more fit with the hand but is a bit unhappy with the way it covers his face now, the previous setting was suposed to mimic some kind of salute
The previous post didn't make it to clear but ofcourse your allowed to mess around with the drawing do it in svg or with the png I dont mind at all

Hmm, apparently all the advice I gave you was bad. :(

Somehow adding a neck lost his 'shifty' character and the knife looks comical that large (though the repositioning is good).

IMO if you go back to the first version, fix the knife position and adjust his shoulders so he looks like he's hunching forward.

I had a little bit of a play. I shifted the Goblin down in the frame to make him look smaller, fixed the knife and had a play with the eyes. His left arm is just hanging there (looks like he wants to hack it off with the knife, actually) and his shoulders should be more prominent to indicate crouching but I dunno how to do shoulders from that angle. :(

* Added some highlight and shadow this time
* Decreased the knifes size
* Decreased the size of one eye think the evenness before was making him look less "shifty" to
* Added some pink in his ears that I had somehow forgotten before but was planning to add

I know the knife doesn't cast any shadow but thats mostly because I imagine we might move it around some more yet

Don't know what to do with his left arm suggestions are welcome

And I don't mind bad suggestions either hard to know how it really would look in advance
