Level 0s for every Level 1 - Humans
Aethaeryn gave me a kick in the butt to release what I've been working on as a result of this thread, where a bunch of people came together to brainstorm. Unfortunately we had to derail peet's thread to do it, but I like what we came up with.
So, here are some frankensteined graphics for anyone to use with hopes that people will contribute more and discuss ideas about unit stats. About the sprites, I'm really not an artist and I'm actually colorblind, so make of that what you will.
Let me note that I'm not really looking to put this forth into factions or an era, yet. I have 2 projects that will benefit greatly from having level 0 units to work with, so that's my main goal.
Right now I've only got humans, but I want to extend this to other races.
Also, if you don't like having another level 0 layer of "youth," then just pretend it doesn't exist. I'm leaving that in for myself, but I won't get into the stats here right now.
So, take the discussion where ever you want. Remember that there doesn't have to be a consensus between everyone for this to be useful (to me, at least ).

If you need any help writing the Unit .cfgs, or just don't want to do the grunt work, I'd be happy to volenteer for it.
Needless to say, I think this is a good idea, I already like the woodsman, ruffian, and peasant units.

This is not even trying to be a faction.

Yeah, i'd give the initiate a TC'd end to his staff, like it's painted TC, rather than the Mage's globe.

I didn't think to use TC. I'll see what I can do. Putting a TC on top of the staff is a good idea.
I made an initiate before that had the mage's hood and I think it looked top-heavy. Putting a whole new robe on him would just make it look like a mage. I don't know what else could be done to differentiate it from the mage.

Giving him less scruffy hair would be a start in distinguishing the two.
And don't forget, the Initiate could use a female alternate.

To help with other lvl 0s:
Some I remember coming across are the Wose Sapling in The Rise of Wesnoth, Elvish Civilian in Invasion from the Unknown (but NotUD suggested that they be split between male (fighter/archer) and female (archer/shaman)), and Drake Hatchling in Flight to Freedom (I think that was the name of the drake campaign). I think it's best to use preexisting lvl 0s as a starter at least (especially if in mainline like the sapling) because that saves work.

I don't get what you mean, Wose Saplings are still in the TroW folder and have great graphics. They're even used in the Ooze Mini-Campaign now.Lim_Arcadia wrote:I still have the sapling .cfgs, and could easily get the older ones all they would requre is a little bit of an update, graphicaly and WML-ily...

This is great stuff. Other than the slightly big heads on the youths, they look nice. However, are they intended be level -1 or what? Does the game support that?
My current projects:
MP pirate campaign: The Altaz Mariners
RPG sequel: Return to Trent
MP stealth campaign: Den of Thieves

They are just lvl 0s set to lvl into other lvl 0s.
