Random Maps

Post by Relic »

I have been wondering about some possible improvements to random maps.

Would it be possible to add the save map button to the generate game screen? I know you can do this once you start a game, but in doing such you reset all the random generation settings. The settings aren't saved or stored.

If this can't be done without problems, could the winter, marsh and desert random maps be added to the map editor?

Would it be possible to save the last state of the generation settings?

I would like to see randomly generated maps have random names. This would allow you to have decent save files if you want to replay it like scenario maps. Using user map as a file name will automatically overwrite the last user map making problems for testing different maps and storing replays if you forget to do that immediately. Even maps you name as files don't use the file names, but user map, it would be nice to add a name tag automatically in the editor or at least prompt for map name.

Just a few thoughts.

Assuming this is cobbled together from some sort of dictionary, you'd risk two random maps having the same name. That would be very confusing.

That happens already with units and the Markov name generator. I ended up with an Elvish Druid and a female Sharpshooter both called 'Lómong' in the same scenario. But well, I could have renamed them if I wanted to.

Sure, but your saved games aren't named after your units, so naming conflicts aren't a big deal.

I like the idea of a "Save Map" button.

I still reckon that "Desert Map", "Marsh Map" etc. should be integrated into the Random Settings screen on the UI side rather than being separate 'maps'.

UI is one of the areas most needing improvement(leader gender selection, Add-On tabs by category, Add-On popularity/quality markers, MP server tabs by game category, registered user names on mp server, etc...) while lacking any progress almost completely.

so i dont think such trivial things like random map compactness would improve any time soon. :augh:

Since I found Wesnoth (0.9.6), I always wondered why there is no Random Map (Cave) scenario... I would like to generate random cave maps, but the WML for that specific generator is so... complex.
I got better!

Have a look at HttT's Sceptre of Fire scenario.

I think he meant a more generalized case of that code. HttT's one is very specific to me, I for one.
