letting Konrad use different paths
what i mean is that konrad should have the addition of being more than just advancing to a stronger more powerful leader. I believe the leadership abilitiy should stay but that he should be able to have more than one pathway like turning him into one of the elves or dwares, n so on. Bascially what i mean is that the player can chose to have konrad fight the way he likes. If he a person who like fighting on hills then he can use to have konrad upgrade with drawish abilities if the person is a forset fighter than konrad can used him to have eleves abilities or if a person like to use mages then konrad can also have mage abilities. or if a person like using merman than konrad should merman abilities n so on. I wouldn't recommend that abilitiy unless there was a way to have a option where he can switch up between abilities so that way he must prepared for that current Scenario.

it up to the person to use what abilities konrad should have. i think it would be a nice addition for than there more critical thinking to be involved, when using the pathway the person may want.

I think it's generally good idea to have one or two main heroes who have more complicated advancement trees. This would be good for any campaign based on such scheme.
Konrad could have leader's path, archer's path, elusive path and maybe mounted path, and they should be branched on higher levels too.

He was joking (I think) That idea goes against FPI and would make dark adpets over powered.
As for your proposal. Konrad is a human and fights like a human. No other humans get to advance for other race abilities I don't see why he should be diffrent. An optional line with him on a horse might be interesting but nothing on the lines you were thinking.

What about having Konrad's tree look liek this? I don't mean himn to actually be represented by such units, nor him having exactly the same stats, but he could be slightly more like them, less like normal Konrad:
1 Elvish Warrior + his tree
2 Mounted
2.1 Cavalry
2.2 Knight/Lancer
3 Elvish Archer + his tree
Damn O.O i dont remember what were original Konrad's unit type's.
Ie. Konrad as Knight wouldn't be exactly liek knight - he should have weaker charge attack but his normal attack shoudl remain there, etc. etc.
Of course i dotn think this would happen, but still i think it's a good idea in general, just needs to be taught by someone more expierienced.
